Picked up my truck last week and only have about 550mi on it, but I’ve been encountering a weird issue with door locks and I’m curious if anyone else is seeing this.

When exiting my truck, I have a key fob in my pocket. Other key fob and key card are in my house, at times miles away from the truck when I’ve encountered this.

Upon exit, I can place both feet on the ground, hit the lock button inside the door, and watch the locks go down. I then close the door, and the truck will honk 3x and unlock itself.

I’ve had this happen twice now when I’m fully outside the closed door and hit the passive entry lock button.

Thankfully in all cases, the truck beeps 3x indicating it hasn’t successfully locked. That said, it’s a bit unnerving wondering if it’ll just pop them open some time when I don’t catch it. Super strange to me and a behavior I hadn’t experienced on my previous Ram. Anyone else seeing this and have any advice? I’ll bring it to the dealer if not… and I’m sure I’ll fail to get it to do the same thing with a tech in person 😂

I’ve never tried your technique for locking the door. I would normally close the door and hit the external lock button. Have you tried that to see if there’s a difference in behavior?

Yup - 2x now I’ve had this behavior after closing the door and hitting the drivers side passive lock button.

Apparently I don’t read things thoroughly - I see you said that in the original post.
Are you 1000% sure you don’t have another key fob in the truck?

Question: why are you exiting the truck and hitting the lock button inside the truck?

Have you tried just exiting the truck and hitting the passive lock button?

So I searched high and low and didn’t find a random key in the truck. Also, I left my key fob in the house and went back into the truck and attempted to start it. The truck did not start, so that furthers my confidence there isn’t a key in the truck somewhere.

However, I then locked the door and shut it. No issues there. Then I hit the passive unlock and the truck beeped 3x and unlocked. That was with keys inside the house, though not too far away… maybe 20’ to the nearest fob.

Maybe the key fob proximity of this system is just fundamentally significantly different from my previous Ram?

I think 20’ is too close honestly.

Mine does this every time. I don't even try anymore. I just use the fob or the passive button on the outside handle to lock it now. Better safe than sorry not locking any keys inside.

This is definitely not normal. The door handle lock "button" works 100% of the time with the fob in my pocket.

Sounds like yours is reading the fob as still inside the vehicle. Certainly isn't supposed to work the way you're experiencing

Thanks, I tend to agree.

I can accept that it’s slightly different from my previous vehicle, but it sure doesn’t feel right that I can’t lock the truck from outside the closed door with the passive lock with key fob in my pocket.

Also, I find it very strange I can unlock the truck if it’s in my driveway with keys in the house, too close to the garage. That’s a major liability, to me.

Did you find a solution? I just got mine today and am having an issue. Though I also can’t find 1 key fob already that left the dealer with me I am 99.9% sure. I have locked this car every way possible and just lull the handle a few times and it will unlock with the key 50+ feet away in the house. I was hoping my lost fob was in the truck but have been over everything about 3 times and can’t find it and at start it says bonding detected? If you can’t lock the doors this is an issue.

I’ve seen from others on Facebook this is the way their Level 1 door locks work, as well.

In your situation, I would try to start the truck without key fob in your pocket and see what happens. If there’s any chance that missing key is in your truck, that should start the vehicle.

For me, I have all 3 keys accounted for, and I’m unable to start the vehicle without those 3 with me. So, I’ll discuss with the dealer, but as for now I’m just trying to force myself to use the passive entry lock on the outside door handle each time I exit.

It’s a way for you not to lock yourself out of the car, it’s trying to idiot proof it. Even if the key is outside when ur doing that locking method. It still thinks it’s “inside” and doesn’t want you to be locked out

other brands do the same thing, my dad has a tundra and it will not let u lock it from the door inside even if you’re out of the car with the key

my rho randomly behaves like you describe above
but,,, just now I exited, hit the 'lock' button on the drivers door and walked away. It was all happy and worked as expected (no 3x beep and unlock).

my previous ram didn't behave this way (randomly do the 3x beep when no fob in the cab); it worked as one would expect, only 3x beeps when a fob was in the truck

Sadly I can’t start the car so likely no key in it (lost one fob somehow driving home and doing what ever I did but no stops?

Anyway I played with the settings and thought I had the issue resolved but then had the doors locked and the Key far away inside and I grabbed the door and boom unlocked again with nothing in my pockets. It’s like magic but annoying as I can’t figure out the trick.

So I don’t dare leave a gun or valuables in the car at all but they can’t start the car?

Still playing with things but can’t find a key in there for sure.

I’d get that to a dealer ASAP

Sounds like the key might still be in the car somewhere. It’s defo trying to keep itself from locking the key in the car. Most modern cars have it. Maybe it’s in a seatback pocket or something? I know you said you checked. Try the tried and true method of having a woman go find it for you. They’ll find it in an instant.

Edit: as I was if you can’t start it maybe it rly isn’t in there and your car is possessed.

I am not ready to admit to my wife I bought this and lost a key less than 2 hrs after. But yes I am sure she will find it if it’s in there but I can not start and the doors unlock if you grab the tailgate or drivers door no matter what I try
