Planning a trip to UT & want to visit “Peekaboo Slot Canyons”. There is a 4+ mile access road that is described as “beach” sand. Reviewers recommend taking a guided tour using rented SxS vehicles.

Chat GPT says a high clearance 4x4 with lockers, low range and deflated tires (12-20psi) could make it, but they recommend bringing extrication equipment, just in case.

Thoughts on driving RHO on this type of trail?

Air down a little and you should be fine. Momentum is your friend. I’d run it. Bring a strap just in case. Park on hard packed ground if possible.

Bring traction boards too. Cheap insurance. Don't go by yourself. Keep in mind, the RHO is still a 6500 pound truck.

+1 on traction boards.

Definitely air down, lock it in 4 hi and +1 on momentum. You'll be fine - I drive on the beach here in FL and it's flawless. If you do get stuck, shift to 4 lo but don't bury yourself. Next step is those traction boards.

Thanks all.

I’m going to stop by the tour place & get their take on current conditions.

If I get a green light, I’m going to air down the tires to 19 psi (got a cool tool to do it fast). As for airing back up, my battery powered inflator probably does not have enough juice to bring all 4 tires back up to 37-38 psi, so getting a 2nd compressor that hooks to the RHO battery.

Looking at $45-$99 units on Amazon. My neighbor has an ARB unit that was $800…thinking that’s kinda overkill, but your suggestions mean a lot! BTW, he’s done some dune running in his Raptor…his advice is keep my speed up (70+MPH preferable) & I won’t get stuck. Ha!

As for traction boards, any recommendations? Thinking they might be good back-up insurance before having to pay for an $800+ tow.

I took mine to the dunes ran tires at 20 - 25 psi
After 4 hrs things got hot but besides that no trouble in the sand . If you want to get crazy put it in baja and hold down traction control till stability shuts off and save your locker for real trouble

Update:

Deep sand was no issue for RHO!

Aired down to 15psi, low range 4x4, locked rear diff…RHO felt unstoppable! And, FUN!

Here are a few photos:

BTW, before you invest in good traction boards, if you have a good bed mat & small mulch shovel, you are good. Not that I needed it, but some did.

Really does feel unstoppable glad you put it to work !!! Not sure how soon I'll go back out to the dunes but it's definitely a thirst quencher
