So I open the door today to get into my truck and it hits me like a ton of bricks. It smells like aomething died in the truck. It was pretty bad. Not eye tearing bad but bad. Last time I used the truck was about 5 days ago (mind you it is not my daily driver). I opened the windows and turned on the vent to see if that helped. That only made it worse. Turned off the truck and started the search. I looked in the Cowl vents, under the seats and finally the cabin air filter. Bingo there they were!

4 dead baby mice and a nest on top of the cabin air filter. I am pretty sure the momma was somebody’s dinner and never came back to the little ones. A little finessing the filter out and a quick vacuum and I got all of the nest and little stinkers out. I checked with an inspection mirror to make sure everything was out. Amazing how something so small can smell so bad. I am so glad they did not eat through the filter and the debris went into the fan. I replaced the filter with one I had for my 3500. Fit pretty good and now no smell. The truck did loose the new car smell now but I got lucky. In hindsight when I smelled the odor I should have never turned on the hvac system in case they did eat through the filter.
So this brings up a question. What are you guys using for a cabin filter?

How in the hell did mice get into the truck?

Mice are magical little fucks. They could get into a hermetically sealed steel container at the bottom of the Mariana Trench.

If you live anywhere like the rural Midwest you just expect them to be everywhere.

So true!!! Little turd used my battery insulation as bedding. I am thinking there is a passage way from the front window cowl.

Fellow Midwesterner here. We keep a couple of cats around the house. Best exterminators ever! They are natural born killers, 4-legged mouse traps!!!
