In a bit of a dilemma...

I found a Rough Country Tri-fold bed cover, brand new in box from an individual on FB marketplace that I talked down to $450. Also found a Retrax manual retractable cover w/ lock for $500. The owner of the Retrax isn't sure exactly which model it is but it was on his 2022 TRX when he bought it.

I was leaning more towards the Retrax because of it having a lock but I keep thinking maybe I should just go w/ the new/unopened RC?

I have the RC didn't worry about the no lock as it locks basically itself anyway under the rail and with tail gate closed.

I had retractable on my last truck and made sure to buy tri-fold this time. I didn’t like that some of the storage space at the front of the bed was taken up by the retractable cover

Can’t speak to that specific RETRAX model, but I have the Rough Country Tri-Fold and have no complaints. It gets the job done, secure, and there’s really no way to open it without dropping the tailgate.

I have never owned a bedcover, but I'm interested. My question: does the tri-fold not take up the same amount of space as a retractable box when it's folded up at the end? I like the idea of a retractable for the ease of use but I'm trying to see why everyone goes tri vs any type of roll-up.

I have the retrax polymor cover retractable. I love it. Great fit and secure

I went with a roll up from rough country. For the price I couldn’t be happier. It doesn’t take up space inside the bed, just a little above when rolled up. And most importantly, when it is rolled up I can still see out the back window!

A trifold won’t take up any space inside the bed. The retractable will have a small compartment inside the bed that takes up a small portion (pic)

Yeah, don't underestimate the size of the canister on the Retrax. Here's a picture of mine (with the cover rolled open). It doesn't extend all the way to the floor of the bed - there's enough space to slide ammo boxes underneath, for example. But you have to watch out for the fragile-ass drain tubes.

The canisters always drive me crazy since they all take up a foot of space in an already small bed. No go for dirtbikes. It is nice for keeping stuff safe. I Wish these trucks had a 6 foot bed.

I second this. Their hard roll up is low profile and takes up no bed room when you're not using it.

Father has a retrax and it has a similar look too.

Update:

Ended up snagging the Retrax. Turns out it was the Retrax Pro Manual and was basically brand new!

On top of that, the guy had every single piece of carbon fiber overlay (interior and exterior) that Carbonaddons has to offer for the TRX and gave them to me free! He was just going to throw them away so I loaded them up like the gentleman I am and brought them home. Not sure if all the interior pieces will fit but we shall see. Also, on some of the exterior the clear coat has peeled/worn off, mainly the hood vents so probably won't install those.

I'd say for $500 I made the right call

I had a Retrax Pro MX on my GMC (lockable but the non-electric open/close model) and I loved it except for 2 things and they're both mentioned here. I wished the cannister took up less bed space in an already short bed and I didn't like the drain tubes because if I did slide something under that cannister, most of the time that would knock one or both of the tubes loose from the cannister and that means if I didn't see the tubes disconnected, the cannister would drain inside my bed. I finally put a little dab of glue on them to hold them to the cannister. Anyway, for my RHO, I went with a BAK Revolver. My buddy has one on his Rebel and loves it and after checking it out, I went that route.
