PSA: This is more of a phone issue than vehicle but I didn't know where to put it. If you're a droid guy like me and are having problems with freezing and lag using android auto try this.
Go to:
Phone Settings > Accessibility > Vision enhancements
Turn off "reduce animations" and "reduce transparency and blur"
When on, they're preventing AA from operating normally. Should be much more fluid and lag free now.
