Backflip MX4 install

Did anyone notice gaps after installing the mx4? I feel the weather strip was warped in the front and the rubber strip at the front might be a little short. Does anyone have pics? Does yours look like mine? Any help is greatly appreciated. Thanks!

Looks good! That's how mine looks on my Raptor. Where it meets the tailgate is more important but I did add an extra strip of foam on the back for waterproofing.

That’s a good idea, I’ll do the same. I do see gaps on the sides which concern me. The black weather strip on the sides aren’t completely flat. Do they settle down after a while?

I had a few bumps on the rubber side strips but flattened out after being in the sun, could try a blow dryer/heat gun. Other than that it sits pretty flush Double check your side rails, you may need to tweak it a bit to achieve the best fit.

I have replaced the foam weather strip with the one below and also put it on the tailgate where it touches the cover. I have went through car wash at least 5 times and it was mostly waterproof. Only wet spot was from the side of the tailgate which I am going to add a thicker seal soon.

Ty! I noticed the gap between side of tailgate also. Please post pics if you can! Does your bed have this opening on the bottom left side of cap?

Did you check your bed for square? I noticed when doing my topper this weekend that mine is whacky and sits about an inch further from cab on passenger side than driverside. Had issues with topper and thought my rails were out of square but no.

Sir, did you end up adding a seal to the side of the tailgate, and if so what did you use and how did you place it? New RHO and new MX4 GEN3 installed a week ago. First rain since then today, and bad leaking at those two spots. Nowhere to else.

I installed this. Stopped all water intrusion at the tailgate. Didn’t stop all the dust.

BTW, the seal at the front of the bed can be attached to the MX4. It serves the same purpose, but doesn’t have the same removal hassles.

This is the way. I did the same back in last June and it’s still working great. I park outside so it gets full exposure to hot, cold, rain, ice, snow.

Thanks so much for the response! Would you mind sending me a pic when you have time of exactly how/where you attached it for the tailgate area? I’m not sure I’m visualizing exactly how you did it. As in, to the tailgate itself? To the corner of the side rail? Or under the cap for the MX4 itself? How small did you cut it down?

And thanks for the advice for the bulkhead. No leaking at those corners so far!

BUT, I did find two install videos on YouTube that were extremely helpful back when I made the purchase. Just search using the manufacturer’s product name. One was made by the manufacturer, but didn’t have the best example of how to install the longer sections. A different, independent video showed a much better technique that worked beautifully.

Three tips:
#1. The adhesion prompter is your friend & they give you plenty, so use it LIBERALLY! After 15 months, all weatherstrips were still strongly adhered.

#2. Take your time to get both sides of the tailgate strips symmetrically installed. Mine looked OEM when done. The instructions included with the kit gave examples of where to install the strips & which sizes to use based on truck model.

#3. If you plan to install the tailgate gap filler strip, the one in that kit doesn’t allow for removal of the tailgate since it adheres to both the bed & tailgate sides. There is a better, though more expensive, option that adheres just to the bed side & slides up the inner tailgate when closing it.

The tailgate filler was nice for avoiding crap falling into the tailgate gap, like if you haul dirt or gravel. But won’t likely do anything for water intrusion (except maybe preventing water spray intrusion on wet highways).
