Ok all done. Full tests with CTA 6, K&N from Stock to Level 3
91 octane runs would be cool. Probably not much of a difference, but nice for us guys who can’t get higher octane.Love it! Very thorough!
A couple of questions, which show my ignorance…
- Have you ever tried Launch Mode to see if you get different times? I’m curious if it builds boost pressure any differently, but also appreciate you kept it consistent for these tests. Reason I asked is 5.0s+ stock run was surprising.
- You definitely perceive more intake and turbo sound in the cab? That wasn’t as obvious in these videos compared to the one you posted yesterday.
- I think you said you’re at something like 95 octane. Ever run these on 91 pump gas to see how times compare with map 3 (especially on Cat6)?
Curious about this myself- in his video yesterday it sounded awesome and made me 100% want to buy one, but in this video I couldn't even notice a sound difference.- You definitely perceive more intake and turbo sound in the cab? Nothing has changed, that is still the K&N intake installed. When you are 100% on the throttle, you will hear the engine over anything. Its when you get the turbo to spool, let off and you hear the intake and BOV. Unless S&B makes a bad ass intake with better sound and performance, I am NOT taking this out! Also, that sound is with a mic mounted on the wiper blade so it is not that loud in the cabCurious about this myself- in his video yesterday it sounded awesome and made me 100% want to buy one, but in this video I couldn't even notice a sound difference.
Listen again to his video. When he is launching from a stop, you can clearly hear the turbos spooling up and building boost. Sounds amazing.Curious about this myself- in his video yesterday it sounded awesome and made me 100% want to buy one, but in this video I couldn't even notice a sound difference.
What are you getting for top speed outa this beast ??
How do you explain the increase in performance then?Someone pointed out the K&N opening doesnt match up exactly with the factory Ram CAI box opening. I still wonder how much of this sound is air passing through where it shouldn’t be, or being overly restricted by the smaller filter.
Question on your boost by gear - What are your boost by gear settings for these fantastic runs?
@JLM1600 and JB industries both tried the same part # and removed immediately because of loss of power. Not sure how better numbers are being attained. Smaller air intakes definitely make more noise.Someone pointed out the K&N opening doesnt match up exactly with the factory Ram CAI box opening. I really can’t explain it, but also see others showing it’s measurably slower with K&N so there are conflicting reports. I’d even read K&N says this kit isn’t specific to the RHO, so I’m trying to confirm fitment. How do you explain the increase in performance then?
They say that the K&N made more boost but less horsepower and torque. It didn’t even make sense to them how it was making less power with higher boost. More boost creates more heat, more heat = less power. If the intercooler was designed for 28psi boost, it is likely not cooling adequately.I really can’t explain it, but also see others showing it’s measurably slower with K&N so there are conflicting reports. Jeff is saying he loves it and that’s awesome. I’m really just trying to understand where the additional noise is coming from and whether this kit has any detrimental effects to a RHO.

Hot air is less dense than cool air. If the air being fed into the engine is too hot, it can reduce the amount of oxygen available for combustion, even with increased boost pressure.
During the JB4 dyno runs, the hood was up for all pulls.I was hoping JB4 would publish the IATs when going to the K&N. My guess is the IATs increased compared to the stock box due to not aligning and mating to the ram air system. Thus hot air under the hood infiltrates, raises IATs resulting in less power. That is the only thing that makes sense. Perhaps in the test Jeff posted, IATs were not as bad as JB4s dyno runs.
It would be some work but very helpful to publish IATs with the OEM Intake vs K&N.
