Dealer wants me to finance the whole RHO

Donald Trump's "One Big Beautiful Bill" (OBBB) introduced a temporary tax deduction (2025-2028) for personal car loan interest on new, U.S.-assembled vehicles, allowing up to $10,000 write-off per year, available to most taxpayers without itemizing, subject to income phase-outs for higher earners, benefiting those buying qualifying domestic cars to boost American manufacturing, with IRS guidance issued for implementation.

There’s just one little wrinkle:

  • Income Limits: The deduction starts phasing out for taxpayers with a modified adjusted gross income (MAGI) greater than $100,000 (single filers) or $200,000 (joint filers). The deduction is completely unavailable for single filers with MAGI over $150,000 and joint filers with MAGI over $250,000.

Talk to @AnthonyRI - word on the street is he might have an absolutely MINT Level 1 BUG Canyon Lake with 1k miles that he should be able sell for $6k less

Welp...I'm out.

My dealer tried to pull the same thing on me. I had to finance mine to qualify for a personal incentive from Stellantis but there was no early pre-payment penalty. I mentioned I intended to pay it off early and their finance guy said I needed to wait 6 months (so he could make more $ from the financing commission). They gave me a crappy rate and then damaged the finish on my RHO by running it through a brush wash so I wasn’t too concerned about them making more $ off me, and I didn’t need to lose more $ out of pocket by accruing interest. I paid it off yesterday, a couple weeks after I took delivery.

If you have other dealers in your area, I would like elsewhere.

A while back, I bought a '23 Rebel HD. Dealer insisted on financing through them although I already had my financing line up with my local credit union. Said I had to have their financing for 3 months before I refinance. So we did the deal. The next week I contacted their finance company and explained what the dealer said. The finance company said that's BS. I refi'd with my local credit union the next week and moved on.

Moral of the story here:

You’re not being offered a great deal, regardless.

What state are you in?

Beating a dead horse, but the only time you should have a financing string attached to a discount is when that is a specific captive-lender rebate written as such. For example, Bighorns in the West coast recently had an extra $1K rebate if you finance with SFS. but on the RHO we're talking about dealer discount only here so that's not the case. Even with the SFS rebate, for your future reference, there is a minimum amount to finance but I think it's around $10K not "all" of it.

90% of the time when I see a dealership on FB saying "we'll beat MD pricing" I shop them and find out that it's with games like this. Which then, makes it not the same (not dealers on this forum, more single-shot facebook posts acting like they've never been on the internet before).

Up here in Canada...I just bought mine. 22200 discount (11,500 Ram advertised and 10, 700 dealer). Put 16000k down. They didn't care one way or the other how I paid - but they DO get financing kickbacks from the banks.

Alot of dealerships entire game is to quickly throw a ton of numbers at people, make them confused with 40 pieces of paper, and then get their signature. It's not really peoples fault either, because unless you work in some form of finance (or have purchased a ton of vehicles)- it's all confusing as hell. They could all go out of business tomorrow and I wouldn't shed a tear. The only reason they're even in business/exist is because of government/state regulations.

This is why dealerships like Mark Dodge are great. They simply give you an OTD number and ask if you want to proceed. This is the way every dealership should be.
You are absolutely right. This is what happens when you start dealing in volume. Can you imagine if Mark Dodge played all of these games at the volume they are dealing with?

At sufficient scale, you need to get people in the door and out in trucks as fast as possible. That really eliminates the possibility of all of these dealership games.

Hello everyone title mostly says it all. I am looking for a level 1 RHO in Canyon Lake. They are offering me $82,200 with an msrp of $86,680. They won’t do it if I don’t finance the whole thing for 6 months. Thats not the route I want to go with $20,000 to put down. Is this just a tactic to make them the most money possible?
I just got a 2026 RHO level 1 in forged blue out the door $73k. You can do waaaaaay better

I’d say that’s a really good deal out the door. Taxes and everything? Really good.

I work at a dealership. If you finance thru us we get a kick back from the lender we send the loan thru. I usually do a credit union to get you a lower rate and I ask for my customers to keep it for 120 days. After that they can refinance or pay off if they choose. If you pay off before or refinance it we get what's called a charge back. If you are trying to pay cash I advise my customer to just send a big first payment. But to keep the loan for a minimum of 4 months. I don't know about you guys but these financial institutions make enough money off us as well. I can assure you that these dealerships taking 10-13k off these trucks don't make much. They get factory money 90 days after the sale if they hit all their metrics but it isn't thousands either. It's probably 500 to 800 per vehicle. With the Internet now a days the car business profit has gone down the drain. We bank on the average consumer walking in and we get an opportunity to sell them product. The cars themselves don't have much margin anymore.

If the dealership was easy to work with you and gave you a good deal keep your word and keep the loan for 120 days. Now if they where shitty then I wouldn't do business with them I don't care how good of a deal it was. It's just a car. There are many of the exact ones sitting somewhere else. One thing I don't do is pressure anyone on buying and also don't clobber them over the head. I sleep very well at night. Am I in the business to make money, of course. Who isn't???!!!!!

Well, this is good context. That said, if it comes to money in my salesperson's pocket, vs. me losing money paying interest for four months, it is a hard sell for me to take that hit to benefit someone else. In my opinion, the model needs to be adjusted, rather than asking people to take that hit so that the salesman or finance guy can go to a nice dinner on my dime.

Stealership scum. Anthony and mark dodge is the only dealership i have found i like. All the rest drive me insane. My local one is a nightmare.

No shitty ram dealership im not using your poverty financing. lol

If you have the money to pay it off send 90% of your balance on first statement then your paying dollars in interest. Trust me we are not going to a NICE dinner on a mini deal!!!!

The salesperson is not making money off the finance at 95% of the stores. And even if they did with how much of a loss it's in the front of the deal the little finance reserve we make still doesn't dig us out of these looser deals sir.

At the end of the day you can choose to do it your way and call us scums. But when you turn everything to the Tesla model and you can't negotiate prices and you pay MSRP like the Tesla model is then you will want to negotiate a deal with us scums.

With all due respect if I could create a black list of the customers like you that think we are just scums and refuse to provide service to you folks I would.

We work long hours put up with a lot of BS just to provide for our families. Dont know what business you are in but I wish you the best and I hope it's prosperous for years to come.

I think a lot of people work hard for their money. Getting you a kick back at the expense of my hard-earned money is pretty low on my priority list.

Also your Tesla commentary is absurd. The manufacturer-dealer relationship artificially inflates the MSRP because they know nobody is actually paying that at the dealer. It's like shopping at Kohls.

If it were DTC, the prices would be set at actual market rates and everyone (except dealerships, obviously) would be better off for it.

What does the kick back cost you? If you have cash to pay for it then like I stated send 90%of your balance on the first payment. And then pay it off after 120 days. How much does that cost you is dollars. The ones who loose here are the financial institutions who are making a killing off us. The dealerships get the kick back from the bank.

I bet most of you still have a loan on your trucks and are financing your vehicles right now. So don't even know what the problem is. Ignorance is what it is.
