2025 Ram RHO
Received my RHO after months of waiting, drove for week, then noticed coolant on floor of garage. Brought it in and was diagnosed with Frost plug failure, Truck has been disassembled in order to get at plug, and needs reassembling. Going on 3 weeks. So disappointed and wondering how I should pursue. Working with RAM CARES and think they should give me new one as the value on a truck completely disassembled is obviously lower than one that has not been ripped apart and reassembled. Any thought?

What's a frost plug?

"freeze plug" on an engine, also called a "core plug" or "expansion plug", is a small, cylindrical part that seals holes left behind from the sand casting process during engine manufacturing, essentially preventing coolant leaks and protecting the engine block from damage caused by expanding ice in cold weather by allowing it to pop out instead of cracking the block; it's designed

How would the vehicle value be lower because of a freeze plug? It’s not as if the truck has been wrecked, or had multiple trips to the dealer for the same issue. It’s a simple freeze plug, but just because they had to take the engine out to get to the plug does not decrease the value of the truck.

Agreed, unfortunately I highly doubt they will consider the idea of replacing your truck because of this.

Sorry you're having to go through this. If I was purchasing a truck and found out the engine had been pulled for any reason, it would affect the value for me personally. I would push for something, monetary or otherwise.

You’re not getting a new truck over this. That I’m confident.

Let me ask you this, if you had a choice between exact same trucks, one with 100 miles but no issues or one with 100 miles where the cab and engine were taken out, freeze plug replaced and then reassembled. Which would you choose? How much more would you pay for the one that had not been disassembled, repaired and reassembled? That is a real value variance.

All irrelevant.

You’re not getting a new truck because of an engine freeze out plug replacement. Happens, even on higher end vehicles.

Stinks, I agree, but nothing you can do but be patient. It happens. Get over it.

Well unless you knew the dealership real well you wouldn’t know that it had been done. Carfax is a joke and wouldn’t tell you what had been done either. You would probably not be allowed to see previous service records as it would show previous owners information and they usually do not allow that, but some do.

Then it would come down to the dealership that did the work on the truck, then the actual tech. Because let’s be real not all dealerships, service advisors, or techs are created equal.

The the long answer is, I would have no problem with buying the truck side by side because I wouldn’t know the freeze plug had been changed out in the first place unless the sales guys somehow knew that and most have zero idea what it has had done in service.

I wouldnt be to worried about the cab being lifted off the frame, Ford/Ram and now GM has been doing this for repairs on trucks for over 20 years. I just had a freeze plug that needed replaced on my 19 Ram cummins...fixed and then no problem.

With it being a straight 6 I'd imagine it could be replaced in the truck, no biggie. But sorry this happened for sure.

Ram or any other manufacturer isn't going to give someone a new car on their own. If you want a new truck quit talking to Ram. You have to get a Lemon Law attorney involved. In most states the car just has to meet the definition of a Lemon. Once it does even if it's fixed afterwards there's a good chance they're gonna have to buy it back or offer a settlement. Issues that affect drivability and/or safety are even easier to get a claim. Lemon Law attorney's usually work without a fee to the consumer. I would contact one this week and let them deal with it. They should know reps from the manufacturer and are able to navigate the process. It may take a bit but it's the best way to handle it, i've been through it. Consumer protection laws exist for a reason.
