Oil filter pictorial…what does this mean?

I’ve noticed on certain Mopar accessories & some parts, there are no longer written instructions. Instead, they are using pictorials to provide instructions. I get it. Not everyone reads/speaks the same language & some folks may not be able to read.

See the attached oil filter install instruction photo. What does this mean? Specifically, steps 3 & 4?

I initially translated as…

**Hand spin the filter until the gasket touches the filter mounting surface on the engine, then tighten 1 more turn.

I did that, but the filter felt waaaay too loose. I could still turn it easily, further tight or loose, with my hand. The factory installed filter took a bit of effort with a filter wrench to remove, so I figured my initial translation was wrong.

So, my second translation…

**Hand tighten as much as possible, then one more turn with a filter wrench.

After maximum hand tightening, I put a filter wrench on it, but no way was it going to go one more turn. That would be waaaay too tight.

So, I settled for my old stand-by of “tighten as much as possible by hand & then a 1/4 to 1/2 turn more with a filter wrench”. Feels pretty snug, but about like the factory installed filter.

What would you do???

I would double check that the gasket/oring of the og filter didn't stick to the eng
 
I think whoever is picking up RHO soon should ask the dealership for specs. I'll ask them when I pick up mine soon

I did that. Cleaned the mounting plate carefully, as always.

I really think my 1st translation is what they meant…maybe the oil is so slick, one turn after gasket contact just “felt” loose. IDK.

I was going to call my dealer, but figured I’d get a generic answer. I mean, it’s not rocket science. It needs to be just tight enough that it doesn’t leak or come loose from engine vibration. That’s it, right?
 
Always put oil on the o-ring before tightening, trust me.

You are correct. I've always done it this way, but with these engines you never know.. smh.
 
Always put oil on the o-ring before tightening, trust me.
I did. I’m thinking the oil is so slick, it “masked” how tight the filter really was after 1 turn from gasket contact.

I've never used a wrench to install a filter, only to remove them. I do them hand tight with dominant hand, after cleaning engine surface, filling filter and lubing the O-ring. Not had a leak in almost 30 years and by the time I remove them, I always require wrench because somehow it tightens over time, or maybe I just lack the necessary lefty-lucy rotational strength.
