Looking for opinions on where others have had a better experience. I have an upgraded '22 Gladiator that I'll be letting go with my RHO. I'm in San Antonio so my initial thought was just drive it to Lake Charles, trade it, and make a weekend out of the deal. I'm worried about getting low balled since I'll be making the trip, they will have me locked in a bit. I have seen this with a couple other users on this forum.
Trade? (hope for the best)
Carmax?
Go through the pains of direct?

Everyone’s situation is a bit different.

I did a local deal & about broke even $$$ wise as compared with MD, even without a $10+K discount. How?

Well, PHX has crazy sales tax on new vehicles, so the trade credit helped immensely.

My trade was pristine. And, I wasn’t going to drive it from PHX to LA…too much hassle & risk. Wholesale (selling to Carvana & such) was under $44K. With minimal negotiation, I got $48K from my selling dealer.

My dealer gave a minimal discount off MSRP (hey, it was their 1st RHO & they had two potential buyers lined up behind me), but I got some heavily discounted to free accessories that I was going to buy, regardless.

And, I didn’t have to pay for shipping.

But, if I had no trade, MD or other discount dealers would have been a no brainer.

If I had a ‘22 Gladiator & lived in San Antonio…IDK. I’d probably drive it over to MD & get some sales tax credit.

I’ve seen brand new ‘24 Gladiators advertised with 20% off MSRP, plus dealer discount.

Just plan on getting hosed on the trade & you won’t be disappointed.

If it's upgraded, private sale would yield best results. Carmax and carvana tend to offer me ~70% of what I can get direct. That kind of money isn't worth convenience but maybe it is to you. MD can prob get you a tenative trade in offer with pics n such.

Take it to Carmax, ask MD to match. If they won't (which they likely will not) run the numbers and see what works best for you. List privately for sale now on cars. com for at least 7% more than the Carmax offer (nothing to lose, its free to list). Also, remember, MD will deliver up to 250 miles. That gets you to Schulenberg. They will also drive your RHO to SA for about $200. I've bought 3 trucks from them, a trade in didn't work in any of the situations (offer was always on the very low end - very understandable given the discount we are getting). With current discounts on jeeps, it could be rough to get a good trade. Takes some effort, but it's up to you. Good luck!

I sold mine to Carvana. Got a really good price and it couldn't be easier. Trade is always going to be the worst deal, especially when you've already locked in the new vehicle price, removing one of the negotiating levers.

Trading in has always worked better in my experience due to the fact they even if they gave me 1-2k less then selling, I save way more on taxes because when you trade in a vehicle, you only pax taxes on the difference.

So if you trade in a $60k truck and buy a $75k truck, you only pay taxes on $15k difference between the 2. So you can save $6k in taxes by trading in a vehicle depending on your state sales a tax.

you’ll have to do the math as every situation is different

California doesn’t allow that. We pay tax on the full price of the new vehicle no matter what you trade in. So not only do we have a higher tax rate, we also save nothing as an added bonus 😃

Michigan is the same

Very similar to Florida. I ended up getting $6k off local instead of $10k from Mark Dodge. But saved an additional $2500 in taxes and $1500 in savings getting the vehicle down from Louisiana. So it was super close as far as price. And since my truck isn't built yet from my May order, it was a no brainer. Exact same build as well. And if I have any issues, I have somewhere local to take it. Win, win, win.

Traded my '23 Ram Limited in for my RHO at MD. Got a very fair price and the offset with the sales tax made it an even better deal.

Fortunately for me, I have nothing to do with the trade appraisals so I can just leave you with some mechanics here.

When your truck is in transit, we can do a remote appraisal using the VIN, miles, and photos.
While still not a 100% guarantee until the date of transaction, it's close enough in time (3-5 weeks) that things are reasonably stable compared to your entire order timeline. Lets call this raw value $30K.

You take that number, and add in your sales tax multiplier if applicable (lets say multiply by 1.08x for AZ). Now we're at $32400
Now subtract your cost of shipping (just use $1.00 per mile in this case, 1000 miles) Now we're at $31,400 effectively.

Bring car or data to carmax, carvana, your neighbor, etc. If they're better than $31,400, sell it.
If not, ship & trade.

Now this of course ignores logistics & TIME (not cost) which are different for everyone. If you're shipping a trade, we have to get the trade before the new one goes out. Could leave you shy one set of wheels for a few days. If you're driving a trade, that's a LOT of your time. Chances are you won't save a ton of $ by driving compared to shipping once you've paid for fuel, hotel, food on road, and your time.

You will NOT leave your house, driving to Mark Dodge, without knowing what your trade value is, however. You're not going to be stranded in Lake Charles saying well shoot I guess we have to drive two cars home. All of that can be handled in advance unless you arrive and the vehicle is now somehow drastically different than what was presented (aside from planned miles to get it there).
