Shift to P then select gear

I was sitting at a stop light this past weekend. When the light turned green, I pushed the accelerator and got a warning light stating "Shift to P then select gear". It was a little unnerving with a line of cars behind me. Anyone else have this issue and any idea what the root cause is?
Had this happen once, no CEL ever came of it. Weird glitch. Tinted windows a couple weeks after and still never had it happen again

@daniellelaven022 No, they did not give an eta on part arrival. I am going to call them later this week for an update. Fortunately, it hasn't happened again (knock on wood).

Did they give you any type of eta on when the part will arrive? @cconnorhtx First thing I do when I get in the truck is turn that off, did you buy that auto stop start eliminator? I don’t mind just hitting the button but I haven’t done much research on getting rid of it though. Never liked the feature especially living in the desert, I feel like too much wear and tear, and the ac blows like crap when the engine stops, and I am not about that life! Heat advisories out by me it was about 112 today 😅. @emmeer I Hope they try to expedite the part once it’s available!!!
Hi Danielle

I do (did) the same thing as you every time with the AS/S but I ended up getting the Eliminator and it is fantastic. I had one on my previous AT4 and it's just one less thing I have to push - even though it is so easy to just reach down a press

Easy install and it works, every single time. Highly recommended!

Totally forgot we have autostart/stop after installing the eliminator. Should be everyone's first mod!

Well men it happened again, service shifter came up. Need to find a time to get my truck in to the dealership to see what it could be.

Have had it replaced before? I think I remember reading that you had a similar issue previously.

Ya they replaced the PRNDL bezel there was a stored code for that. He couldn’t duplicate my service shifter issue so he started with the PRNDL bezel and then I told him I’d drive it if it comes back on I’ll bring it back in. He’s going to look and see if there’s anything on the tech notes side to see if they put anything new out since I had mine in.

did you ever get the "Service shifter" issue figure out? I'm at 13k miles and just got that message for the first time yesterday driving on the freeway and the lights on the bezel turned off. Turned the truck off and back on right away and no message and the lights were on on the shifter bezel so all good.

I did not. It came on again and I brought it in and they couldn’t duplicate the issues to pin point what the fault is. It never happened with them. Wish I had better information for you.

I've had the "service shifter" light come on. Dealer replaced the shift control module and haven't had an issue since.

Happened again today exactly at the same spot…under a bridge where is dark enough for the auto headlights to turn on but the shifter bezel did not causing the message to show up. Turned it off and back on and that “fixed” it. Annoying as hell…gonna talk to my dealer.

I've gotten the service shifter message many times, after noticing the locations where I get it I was able to replicate it. In my case it always happens when the head lights are set to auto and I enter a dark area like a multistory parking during the day. Once the head lights automatically turns on and the interna screens dim, I get the service shifter message and the P R N D letters go dark. Here's a video of it:

Yes! Same situation as me. What did your dealer say?

Their technical support department is working on it and are in contact with the factory. The service manager said they should have the report on the work performed by Tuesday. I also did get a check engine light and the vehicle failed to go into drive until the third restart. So they are working on that issue as well.

I got my truck back today from the service center. The service manager said that there updated the TCM (Transmission Control Module?) with a new version. He showed me a video of them testing the truck during the day and when entering their building the lights automatically now turns on without the service shifter message. I've already have the auto lights turn on when entering a shaded area today without any errors. Hopefully it will stay that way. It is worth asking your dealer to check if there are any TCM updated for your truck.

You can check out a post I made in the Problems/Issues page. I was going down a fairly steep hill. Hit traffic, was stop and go as we went down. I got to the bottom and was getting ready to make my right turn, went to push gas, car went nowhere. I had a flashing "D" drive gear. I put it into park, could not move shifter back to drive. Turned car off/on a few times. I think on the third or fourth time I was able to shift to drive and make the turn.

It was extremely unnerving with a long line of cars behind me, I had my two little kids in the car, trying to put my emergency flashers on and waive people by, which they can't get by because the fucking truck is huge.

Since then, not a single issue...who the fuck knows what is up with these trucks. My plan is that I will keep it until another serious issue like that comes up then I am offloading it. I don't care if I have to drive some base-model POS, as long as it is safe and reliable to get myself and my family around. Then again, it sounds like all trucks are having some pretty serious issues unless you want a Honda. We shall see what happens.
Et tu Honda? I feel ya, but every maker seems to be having trouble lately. Even the “older” Hondas have been recalled for non-trivial issues.

Sounds good! mine stopped doing it but I will bring it up on the next oil change appointment.

That was short lived for me as I got the service shifter message again when entering a dark parking. I used to be able to replicate the message whenever I wanted but now it just seems random.
