Everyone with an RHO…stop & read this…it’s important (re: electronic oil level monitor)

Electronic oil level monitoring. I’ve attached the page in the PDF manual explaining how this works. Read & understand it. Why? Because it could save your engine.

The oil level shown on the display may NOT reflect the engine’s current oil level…especially after an oil change.

Any questions? I sure had some. It’s not all that straightforward, like the sensor only reads “occasionally”, unless the ignition is left in the “run” position with the engine off for 4 minutes & only if the oil is warm & the vehicle parked on “relatively” level ground. And, then the engine must be re-started!

Added note: I’m surprised it will NOT notify you if there is a sudden drop in oil level while driving, like if a rock takes out your oil pan…but, a dipstick wouldn’t notify you either…guess that’s the job of the oil pressure sensor. By the time that warning illuminates, your engine is close to done.
Thanks for posting. I just got my second oil change at the dealership and when I picked it up it had an oil warning "Max Engine Oil Level Exceeded Immediate Service Required". The dealership said they know for a fact that it has 7.5 qts and a sensor must have been incorrectly triggered. They assured me that it was ok to drive and that the warning would go away when the sensor reset. I got home and found your post so did the reset and all is good and warning went away... Thanks again

I just did an oil change 2k after I purchased used 25 RHO level 1 from a Mazda deal ship with 16k. I wasn’t sure what oil or filter they used so I wanted to change it to be safe. Oil guage showed full just at the red line before change. I drained off 8 quarts and added in 7 and was going to wait to see how low it was before adding the .5 quart. It’s been a week of driving 400ish miles total and lots of on off ignition cycles, over night sits. Left it in run for 4 mins to try and get it to update. Still hasn’t moved AT ALL! I’m not sure it’s even working….

Did you let oil temps go to 120 degrees, parked on leveled surface and placed in RUN position for 4mins?

Had the "Max Oil Level Exceeded Immediate Service Required" message pop up 2k miles after my 2nd oil change so figured it could be the sensor. Here's the exact procedure I did to get it reset.

  • Drive the truck until the oil temperature is at least 180°F.
  • Park on a perfectly level surface.
  • Turn the engine OFF.
  • Cycle the ignition back to the RUN position (engine remains off).
  • Wait exactly 5 minutes in this state.
  • Navigate to the Vehicle Info menu on your dash to see if the bar has updated

I would love to know the engineers that thought this was a great idea.....

Heck all you need is a low oil sensor in your pan, like my 90 Mustang 302 had....and let people check the stick if they want. We all know sensors fail....rarely do you see a dipstick fail unless we are talking people lol

Awesome! Just changed mine and wondered why it never got above that third mark with the amount specified. Appreciate the info!

I think it’s easy to miss the 180 degrees oil temperature part of the reset procedure. I actually read my owner’s manual on the procedure so was aware of that. My wife’s Audi is the same deal. Her car does however have the dipstick tube from the factory (without the dipstick; imagine that one). On her car, you can order an aftermarket dipstick and install it so you have both ways of checking. Guess which wires were the only ones the mice decided to chew on….

It’s been over a week driving it since oil change, added in the .5 quart today and after getting to temp left it in run for 5 mins anfter shutting it off and it didn’t move at all. Still shows exactly just under the red mark which is perfectly full.

I may be too old and tired, but this reads how I've always checked my oil with a dipstick. Warm up the engine, flat level ground, engine off...dip n' wipe 3 times to make sure I'm still an idiot.

Blindly adding a quart to any vehicle I've ever owned sounds like a non-starter, and I don't like dancing for a computer; I guess I'll blow oil all over that bridge when I get to it...My brother used to add quarts to his leaky Audi S6, and that thing was always on the edge of blowing up.

Mine is not going off. I got the two recalls done and why not get an oil change while its there. Big mistake, im riding a Jeep while the dealership service department try to figure out how to turn it off. First problem with it.

Fixed, I was told by the service adviser they had to repeat the process several times. The wait process and the entire process has to be followed. Its not a simple oil change

What are people seeing for oil pressure, and how much does it drop or increase depending on RPM? Mine seems to vary quite a bit.

I’m normally around 23-25 psi. I haven’t noticed a lot of variance with RPM but I also haven’t really looked for that.

~20 idle, 22-25 cruising, 48 close to WOT...I floor it around here and I could rack up reckless on top of a token ticket before pressure peak.

Need a load to increase pressure, turbo boost and physical state seemed to matter more than RPM.
