Just purchased truck few hours ago and it died while driving on highway

@frogjbm Do you have the checklist in a document that can be shared? I know I've seen it but just can't find it at the moment. The truck just got off the railcar so it should be close.

RHO PRE-CHECK

  • CHECK ALL REQUIRED SOFTWARE AND UPDATE EVERY NEW SW RELEASE! That includes the new alignment software fix that has been completed BEFORE the customer takes possession.
  • Drive the vehicle and check for codes and resolve (not just clear) each issue!
  • Air Filter/intake - make sure it’s the RHO / HO version.
  • Rear seat airbag "plugs" - make sure not missing in the rear headliner.
  • Interior leather - back of driver/passenger seat and steering wheel - check leather pulled tight / no ripples.
  • Fuses - push/seat all fuses
  • Paint drips/runs - mentioned above - check roof behind glass (if pano) and around shark fin.
  • Tailgate operation - including key fob operation - check alignment and open/close
  • Presence of smart card - usually in center console
  • Check interior glass for scratches, which may appear to be trim panel glue but are, in fact, scratches. Never had this experience on any other new vehicle, but the Ram factory found a way.
  • Check rocker panels by “feel” the dark paint & shadows make dents hard to see. Dents are common from access holes punched into the rocker or when the plugs are hammered into place. Feel around each of the plugs for sheet metal damage.
  • Check headlights for minor cracks that can allow moisture to enter later. These headlights are $$$$. If there appears to be a smudge, get it cleaned off & look closely!
  • Check for paint runs or scrapes under the clear. These aren’t easy to fix & require time in a body shop…unacceptable on a brand new vehicle.
  • Check the frame e-coat behind the front sway bar mounts. If it is already rusted, don’t just let them hit it with a rattle can. It needs proper repairs to prevent future rust.
  • The dealer may balk, but require a 30 mile test drive to be sure no safety system faults appear in the main cluster. Highway drives included, but no WOT launches!
  • Check heated vent and massage seats worked front and heat and vent in back plus steering wheel.
  • Check that the spare under bed is the same premium wheel and tire as those on the truck. Some get shafted with a garbage 18" wheel while others get premium spare. I'd have a problem with that.
  • Check that the battery level is holding at 14 - 14.5 volts under normal operations during the test drive. Some indications of future dead battery problems show up in the form of 13-volt battery readings.
  • Have dealership check engine, transmission oil level also front and rear differentials, and top-off transfer case if low. Many have reported fluids are low, and it can do real damage.
  • Check all hoses are seated correctly, there have been reports of hoses not properly secured and popping off.
  • Check that the bed step can support you while standing on it. Some report that it retracts while in use. That's a warranty fix issue.
  • Check all parking sensors and blind-spot sensors for proper operation.
  • Check the functionality of all bed and console AC outlets. Some reports of failure.
  • Examine front and rear door panels for alignment while closed. Some are blatantly different heights! Check the weather stripping on the inside of each door for imperfections or misalignment.
  • Examine all fenders for body alignment. Check tailgate to truck bed alignment. Check all body panels for proper fit. Issues have been reported.
  • Listen in front of the truck for noisy ballast. Noise indicates fault or failure.
  • Check ALL fluid levels, there have been reports of low coolant fluid for example.
  • Bottom black paint lines are aligned and no issues
  • Verify transmission 2 stage lines ensuring they are fully seated. There have been a few reports where the transmission lines pop off spraying fluid everywhere and ultimately destroying the transmission. The symptom is fluid spray, and truck won’t shift up from 1st to 2nd under WOT. It is directly related to these failed connection points on the transmission lines. MUST CHECK!!!!

Sorry for that. That happened to me twice, back in the shop again. The issue could be like mine where the fuel module and fuel pump was bad. They replaced it and picked it up from the dealer then 11 miles later it did the same thing towed it back to the dealer again. They think there is a wire in the harness that is making a bad connection. So they are now looking into it. I figured I let you know so maybe you can tell them. I hope you get it back soon the first time they had mine for a week. Good Luck!
