I bought RHO because my wife & I enjoy traveling to remote hiking destinations. Many of the best hiking trails are off dirt roads, deep in the desert, mountains or woods. Our previous SUV (BMW) always got us to our destinations, but it took quite a beating at times on rough, semi-maintained forest roads. Let’s face it, BMW suspensions are tuned for pavement!

But, are RHO levels of capability really necessary? And, it’s a wide beast when encountering opposing traffic on narrow, dirt passes. Some roads have little room for error & mistakes can result in a 500+’ tumble down the side of a mountain.

Yesterday, I watched a YouTuber take his new Tacoma up a rough, often sandy, mountain trail. He crossed streams, climbed steep dirt hills and seemed to have a blast. At the end, he revealed the Taco never needed its 4WD engaged. He summarized…all you need is some ground clearance & good AT tires.

I’ve seen a few enter sand dunes & RHO might be a top vehicle choice in those regions. But let’s face it…how many of us live near sand dunes? I’ve driven 45MPH in comfort on a rough dirt path that would have totaled my BMW at 1/2 that speed…but, I didn’t need to do it…just did it to “try it out”.

Have you driven your RHO into places that required its capabilities? If yes, tell us about it!

Not yet, but hope to soon!!

Chris

Tacos and others are great trucks but dont have the towing capacity we need(large boat and hopefully camper soon) or have the same people moving capabilities. While ours will probably never do all that it can, we love it none the less and if it stays a pavement princess so be it :)

As evidenced by my avatar I parked it on the grass as the scuba park. Aside from that, I have actually changed my CUSTOM mode to be all street with the exception of suspension, which I have set to BAJA for those really rutted out back roads around here.

I mean if you don't use the truck offroad you may as well get a tungsten, its faster on the streets lol.... RHO is built to be a high speed, pre running, desert rallying, long travel beast. Not made the tight rock crawling that tacos and vehicles like that are made for. The wheel base is so long and body so wide on rho/trx/raptor. You can rock crawl with it just not optimal for stated reasons. It will ride 10x better than a taco, or any of those and has double the wheel travel. Plus it's a half ton and has actual back seats. Win

To answer your post, I plan to offroad the hell out of mine. I have with similar vehicles (raptor, trx) and they were amazing. Beat up dirt roads at 100 mph, high speed in the desert, sand Dunes, hauling dirtbikes to trailhead , jump it, all the good stuff.

I don't know man, we have some fucking monster potholes here in upstate NY...not sure Tungsten has the clearance.

We had a 37k mile every single option, Laramie Longhorn and traded that in for our RHO because, BAD ASS.

Nuff Said

We have plenty of fast toys and such, but not a Boss off road capable vehicle that does MANY things well, you know, important stuff like massage my back while driving :)

Chris

If you see my video we pushed the RHO pretty good at Silver lake sand dunes and will probably do that same trip another 4-5 times this year, plus we will do a hand full of trails up north.

-maybe I am the annomily but I would never buy a Raptor or RHO and not take it off road. There are other better livable trucks that fit in my garage easier! haha

Another reason to buy RHO...HO motor, beefy frame/suspension/axle/cooling...its a beast to tow with (especially with bags).

Having owned a Tacoma and now a RHO, I have to say they are very different vehicles for the use you’re describing. I used to spend a lot of time on mountain roads, and I don’t think you can beat a Tacoma for that environment. They’re narrow, agile, have good clearance, and superior turning radius. A RHO is opposite in many ways. There are so many places I used to go in a Tacoma I wouldn’t dream of taking my RHO to… and that kind of stinks. It’s just too big of a vehicle to fit in narrow corridors, or you’d absolutely beat the crap out of the body work trying to do so.

But, there are wide open places where the RHO will reign supreme. Open desert, sand dunes, etc.

i got mine cuz it looks cool 😎

Main reason why I bought an RHO is for its off-road capabilities…

I live on the beach so I like knowing I can get out of sandy situations; but don't hardcore off road.

Honestly, if I were going off-road to get to a hiking trail I'd probably take my rivian instead because width :)

Yep, In NC. Did Awesome. Took a professional OR training. The RR Discovery and Taco in the group had some challenges over the obstacles, but not the beast! Maybe the driver, either way everyone loved the RHO. I did have a couple of tight trails that did require a 3-Point turn 😜.

heck yeah my 1st trip is going to be to Pismo Beach

I drove through my yard for 10 days because I needed to stay off of my freshly concreted driveway. Does that count??!!

I’d say it does. I have a friend that got his CJ stuck in his back yard at least you were able to power through it.
