Thunking sound (near drive shaft)

Thanks for the intel.

I am leaning towards replacing the drive shaft...

Thanks again
@Nick797 does group buys somewhat regularly on these. I'd have the dealership do the boot/grease kit and wait for a group buy to save some money. But if you have some cash burning a hole in your pocket, here you go. I did the basic one on my TRX but had to swap the flanges onto the new shaft.

Sadly it appears the remedy for the infamous clunking sound is to go aftermarket.
Surprised Ram hasn't truly addressed this known problem.

East Coast solved the clunk in my TRX. However, even those are seeing the clunk returning apparently.
This is where I am apprehensive about doing this upgrade.
I don't see myself accepting this clunking sound for very long though.

My OCD will have to address this I am sure. I literally thought of trading it in because of it, wife said hell no! Really appreciate the info.
Same. I used to own a Jeep back in the day that had the same issue. Bit of play in the driveshaft. Drove me crazy hearing it

I’m not ok with spending 2k on a new driveshaft. So I pulled it out, cut off the larger crimp clamp, cleaned the splines with brake clean and used the ford XG-8 spline lube. McMaster-Carr has a 5 pack of the crimp clamps for reinstalling the boot. First drive was night and day better, we will see how long it lasts. I’m fine with doing it every oil change if it means I don’t have to buy a new driveshaft. Below is a link to the crimp clamps.

Sick in gonna do that

Are there any risks to removing and reinstalling a driveshaft ? Is it under any tension, need to be put back on a specific way? Or is it just a matter of loosening / tightening bolts ?

Just draw a line on all the individual pieces so you know everything is clocked correctly. I’m not sure if they balance the yoke and shaft separate or together, so it’s best to put it back how you found it. The most dangerous part is having the truck roll over you when pulling the driveshaft, so make sure you do it on a level surface and engage the parking brake.
