Tonneau debate continues

I got a cheap one — the Tyger Auto T1 Soft Roll-Up.

Two main points:
  • Always ready for bikes or dirt bikes
  • Doesn’t take up space inside the bed (all mounts are on top of the side walls)
Downside: clamps are ugly..

In fairness I actually bought the rough country tri fold. Like the oem one i like the ease of on and off or opening... For the cost(value) if it lasts me a few years and I have to replace then so be it.
Did you go with the low profile or flip up version?

I’m currently using a Retrax metal retractable cover on my 2020, but I think I’m not fond of dropping $2k for a new one. I like the price point and reviews I’m seeing of the Rough Country. They look nice from what I can see, though I have some reservations with trifold in general with all of the hail damaged Bak Flips I see on marketplace…

I have the soft tri-fold. Ive used these on all my rams and they work for me. Usually order the mopar one but the value at $230 or so figured i would try it. Hold down system not as nice as mopar ones but similar and easy enough to remove or flip up still. Ordered through @Nick797 along with lugs and locks. Sits on top of bed rails, but i think it looks ok dont get any water in bed at all.

Dang, you make that black truck look good!

I really hadn’t thought too much about a soft cover, but for the price that’s tough to beat. My retrax leaks like a sieve, so better weather resistance sure would be nice.

Does the soft cover flap in the wind while driving?

Thanks bro... No, i doesnt at all. Its tightly fitted so thats a non issue. No wind noise or flapping around at all. I use to take my other ram through the car wash with dryers all the time and held up. Always worried about it blowing a hole in it but it held up for two different trucks. Again, its all preference and use. Its light, doesnt take up bed space, easy on or off and seals the bed. For me its just an mpg saver for the most part.

Does anyone know of a good tonneau cover? The debate continues. I’m looking for a cover that can securely load dirt bikes into the truck. I need easy access when the tailgate is down and won’t take up space when rolled up. When loading my bike into the bed, I prefer the auto-roll ones, but they take up space in the bottom. Also, the rolling aluminum ones appear to take up space on the top. Has anyone had any experience with this? I used to have a soft roll-up cover on my Gladiator that tucked away very nicely. However, living in NYC and leaving the truck parked outside, I’m always nervous when I leave anything in the bed.
I was going to say go with the hard tri-fold like the one I got that can stand on-end, but then I just checked and when it is UP it does cover the CHMSL so even the digital rear view wouldn't work. Unless you ran a trailer cam I suppose. Otherwise you're side-view mirrors only which I don't love.

I went with a Linex LXP, basically a Bakflip MX4 with a Linex coating. Tri-fold, lifetime warranty on the UV coating, does not interfere with the rearview camera, and looks great. If you want tri-fold, then the extra $100 for the coating seems like a no brainer. Bakflip coats it in the factory then ships it directly to a Linex franchise.

I have a Retrax on my 2020 and I’ve been trying to figure out what to do for my RHO when it arrives. Overall, I like my Retrax functions, wish it were better water proofed, but having a hard time justifying $2k+ for a new one.

I do want something that I can open to any width and keep it in place. I frequently haul a dog carrier in the back, and have enjoyed closing the Retrax right up against it to store other items under the protected cover.

Has anyone here tried a Gator Recoil or Retrax IX? Seems like a slightly less refined Retrax, but with the ability to retract and lock into various positions. The price is far more attractive to me… but I’m very curious how it does for water and overall build quality.

Very interesting this is what I was thinking but I flipped mine up and it blocks CHMSL. BUT that can be due to my poverty-stricken quad-cab 6'4" bed.
how does your cover secure in it's most upright position?

There are prop rods on both sides of the bed. You can see one side here. It doesn't block the camera. You can see how the rod stores when not in use. It is not recommended to go over 65mph with the cover in this position.
BTW, loving the truck!

I just ordered up a Gator Recoil. Will report back once I get the truck and get it all installed!

I also ordered up a “Tonneau Buddy” from Realtruck, which looks like a nice storage bin.

We really like the weather tech roll covers. They have one cord you pull to release it rather than two clips on each side that most put. Installed one yesterday and it's a super tight nice fit. Our other truck has a mopar one and it was way more expensive, and we really don't like it. Wish we got the weather tech on that one also,.

I know everyone needs are different but what would the experts recommend for someone in the following boat

Bed won't be used all that much, occasionally on weekends for a bike or hauling some junk to a dumpster - primary function for the cover is keeping crap out of the bed in certain seasons (snow - leaves ) Want something that's a tri fold and good quality to keep leaks out and water when I wash the truck. Price isn't the main concern since I tend to do this dumbass thing where I get something cheaper first, it ends up sucking and then I end up getting the better option next.

Thanks!

I'm probably in the minority here but I'm a fan of hard tri-fold covers myself. Had a BakFlip MX4 on three RAMS then an UnderCover Ultra Flex on my Sierras and now the UltraFlex on my RHO. BOth covers are essentially the same with the exception that I like the exterior covering on the UF better. The skin on the BakFlip seemed kinda thin and flimsy but all in all, both covers do a great job at keeping things secure and dry. Both have drain tubes that install on the underside of the rails that get routed into holes in the bed near the cab. The UF is carpeted on the underside of the cover, which is know is really just a personal preference but I like it better. Installation for both is pretty simple and straight forward and can be done fairly quickly once you've done it a couple times. I think this time it took me maybe an hour in my driveway at 11:00pm with my flood light over my garage on.

I like how the roll-up covers function but couldn't justify the added cost, especially with my wife being an accountant (CFO). And I don't really mind how the tri-tolds function.

I love my Access tonneuno cover they many to choose from. Third truck third cover. Very well made and rolls up out of the way.

I have a retrax pro xr and absolutely love it I have never been a fan of roll n lock i have a accessories business and deal with both on a weekly basis

I’ve had regular soft tops, paragon, backflip and the BAK revolver. I will only get the BAK revolver now. I’ve had it on the last 5 trucks I’ve owned.

You should look at Truxedo..... I've had them on 3 different trucks (the Low Pro model) and have been extremely happy with them for ease of use and such !!

Do the latches towards the tailgate, where you push down to lock the tonneau, get in the way or have a chance or being damaged? Looks like they just hang out at the rear

I bought a rough country tonneau, looks like something my brother would make with scrap parts. It fits but the workmanship leaves a lot to be desired…
