You'd think if you're going somewhere that remote you'd have some safety things with you like a spare tire, jump pack, satellite communications, or another person/truck. I do, because nothing is perfect and shit breaks. That truck that doesn't start could just as easily be a truck that slid into a ditch and is unrecoverable by myself.

In 2026 there is no excuse to not have their ass covered and anyone that can afford an 80K dollar toy truck can afford these things to cover their ass.


It's still not a safety issue. I'm not defending it; I'm pushing back on the safety aspect. Take a little personal responsibility. Everyone cries safety like little bo-peep and expects manufacturers to coddle them because of it. It's not a safety issue, no matter how much people insist it is. Cars have been breaking down since cars have existed.

This is simple: all cars with modern electronics have problems like this. Literally all of them from every manufacturer. There is a direct correlation between how complex a vehicle is and how likely you are to have one of these problems. Doesn't matter if it's a Ford, a Ram, or a Rivian (this one especially in my experience). If you don't like that, buy some stripped-down vehicle with little to no modern technology, and it will be much more reliable.

Maybe a base model Toyota is something yall would be more comfortable with.

I don’t know how a truck breaking down to the point that you need a satellite communicator to obtain rescue doesn’t qualify as a safety risk in your mind… but I get it. I absolutely have a Garmin inreach and jumper with me to cover some what ifs, but I only pull those out when has hit the fan.

Is this only happening to level 1's?

I have a level 0 and I don't think my truck has the proximity feature. At least I don't recall seeing it. I also leave my keys inside my truck for weeks at a time. Its in a warehouse.

Again, the more complicated something is, the more things can break. This is a standard rule for any mechanical device. We can see this illustrated in things that are both much more complicated and much simpler. Vehicles with very few electronic and convenience features are often more robust.

In our free market, you can buy whatever you want. If reliability is most important, you can absolutely tailor your purchase to it. I don't want my truck to break down either, but I know I bought something with a ton of bells and whistles, and those are all potential sources of problems. I accept that as part of owning something this complex.

That's where the personal responsibility thing comes from. For example, as my handle here suggests, I came from a Rivian. I actually owned two different Rivians, but regardless. I switched because Rivian is last in reliability, and mine was really finicky. I didn't consider it a safety issue when the thing broke. Annoying, absolutely, but I knew what I was buying.

I got rid of it because the issues and, more importantly, the proximity to a dealer became too much of a hassle. I lived a 3-hour one-way drive to the closest Rivian repair center. We all want our trucks to last forever with zero problems, but we should also know they'll have more problems than a stripped work truck with no fancy electronics.

You have proximity on your level 0. I have and turned it off the first day, as I didn't see reason to have it on. Your dealer my have already had turned it off before you picked it up.
