Anybody else have issues connecting to apply carplay? any fixes?

Mine connects wirelessly each time for the 2.5 days I’ve owned it which is exactly the same as the Power Wagon I had previously. I would recommend deleting the phone from the truck and deleting the connection in your phone and starting over.

I was going to do a post on this. Its frustrating for sure. I do not like, nor have I ever liked Bluetooth connections. The bandwidth isn't capable of streaming high quality FLAC or 320kbps music. So I am a wired Apple CarPlay only because I store HQ audio via Spotify playlists. That said, I have had quite the issues with Apple CarPlay in this Ram. For whatever reason, it has forgotten my phone; it will show no devices, then I plug it in, and it shows my phone but says it's disconnected (but its plugged in). I cannot get it to connect at all, and the list goes on. Yes, this has been a pure PITA for sure.

Its a weird way to get it to work, but it worked. Plugged in or not, it still wants to be connected via Bluetooth. Even if you go wired, it still wants that to work. Also, apparently it needs WiFi to run Apple CarPlay, which is odd IMO. However, how I got mine to function finally is wiping the connections in U-Connect and my iPhone that are related to U-Connect. Then, while plugged in and connected to the array of USB by the charging area, it refused to connect until I paired it via Bluetooth. As I said, its weird. Why? Because now, it will not connect or play unless I plug it in, so I know its not using Bluetooth. I had to pair it via Bluetooth first. Then it works just fine.

Whenever my Ford did this weird thing, I would shut off the truck, open the door, let the truck turn off completely, then shut the door and try again after starting it, and it normally fixed it. Not with this Ram. I even held the power button for about 10 seconds to reboot the U-Connect, which only helped me get it connected via Bluetooth, as I mentioned above. So the long answer is yes - I have had several issues with Apple CarPlay on this RHO. All I can say is delete any phones in the Device Manager. Reboot the U-Connect, plug in the phone, pair it via Bluetooth, and it should work. That was the process that worked for me.

Now only if they had put a little more powerful processor in this U-Connect. That thing sometimes has a 2-3 second lag between touches...

@FrankNSteinPC, Uconnect in my RHO is slower than on the 12” Uconnect I had in my PW. I only have experience with the 14.4” in 2 different RHOs. The first RHO I looked at, which was fresh off the truck, was so slow I didn’t think it recognized it when I touched the screen. The one in my truck isn’t anywhere near as slow 🤷🏻‍♂️. Surprisingly inconsistent.

Something I’ve found aggravating about CarPlay is constantly being asked if I want to let my wife’s iPhone be connected via CarPlay when it’s plugged in charging. She has to turn off CarPlay on her phone to make it stop.

was driving all day for first time today and I can confirm the Carplay is bit glitchy. It worked ok in the beginning, but 3rd time I got in the truck today it wouldn't see my phone. Had to manually remove it and connect via Bluetooth again.

I actually like the Bluetooth connection as I'm over the cables. Challenger has older cable-only uconnect and many times I touch the phone and it just disconnects totally. On the other hand, it's old uconnect module (2018 MY) is way faster than the 12 inch in RHO, I noticed even if I skip songs through the buttons on the steering wheel ther is like second delay lol, and it's instant in the old challenger

what I'm mostly unhappy about though is that you can't choose the Carplay GPS map on the instrument cluster...

Apple Maps will display directions in the instrument cluster.

Weird that there is that much inconsistency in the same product in the same trim. Mine is noticeably slow. Using the auto drive it complains I’m not looking at the road because I’m trying to get U-Connect to react. Most of the time it will take 1-3 seconds to respond. Sometimes, never. I had the exact same response times before and after putting a screen protector on that 14” screen.

ok, first of all, how did you put the analog instrument graphics there? 😀 😀 played with it yesterday and couldn't keep it on as default

I got lucky, I think. I was scrolling through the graphics and kept getting the one that shows the sport gauge. If you scroll left and right, you’ll get the traditional gauges. But I think if you change modes, the gauges change.

If you change the theme’s on the center screen, you’ll get different colors. Mine is red so when the needles move, it’s got a red stripe.

This is the way especially with 18.4.1 update

I see, that I was able to do, but then when I tried to see other info the gauges dissapeared..

Historically, I have had good luck with CarPlay as long as I abide by two basic rules:
  1. Alway have the latest version of the OS running.
  2. NEVER have any beta version installed.
I assume that there's development work to be done on Stellantis' side after Apple goes through a round of updates and CarPlay gets real wonky until they complete it.

Even though it works great, I still experience the music cutting out every now and then like others have reported.

The new 14” is noticeably laggy vs my previous 12” in my 2500.
Nothing terrible but it is noticeable.

Does the U Connect update over the air by itself? I see a setting about updates via WiFi but is this necessary to get updates or it’ll just do it on its own while driving?

I connected my truck to my home wifi so it can get OTA updates whenever.

Software Downloads over Wi-FiThis setting will allow software updates to happen over Wi-Fi. Selectable options for the setting are “On” and “Off”.

I intentionally did not as these trucks don't need more encouragement to wake up at night and potentially drain the batteries

UConnect will update without a WiFi connection.

The way it's worked for me on the last two updates: When turning the truck off, a message about the update appears on screen. You are given an option to install or schedule it for later; several forum members have mentioned that it doesn't reschedule. On the latest update, I was at a gas station when I shut the truck off, so I didn't select either option for the update. When I got home and turned the truck off 30-minute later, the system presented the update again.

That's interesting. When I tried to turn off the truck and not choose either option, the screen/radio would come back on and stay on even after locking the truck. This repeated several times until I selected "schedule" at which point it actually would shut off, but the update never came back

So the rho’s do have wireless carplay? Mine hasn’t worked since new if that’s the case..

How long did you leave your truck alone after not selecting an update option, locking the doors, and keyfob out of range? My truck was off and locked for about ten minutes while at the gas station; keyfob out of range for about half the time. When I started it again, the UConnect system operated normally.
