Exhaust With High Flow PSP Downpipes

I have the AFE, and I would not recommend it. Drone is terrible at 2.2k, even the manufacturer said, "it is what it is." So they are doubly useless in my book. I had to put 2 internal baffles into the exhaust to keep the drone manageable. But I lost all my pops and bangs. Still have burbles.

I have the PSP DPs as well but not installed yet. The recommendation I got from Dusty was the Flowmaster FX. I am hoping that with that and the downpipes, I will be quiet-ish on the freeway. I don't mind being rowdy on the side streets. That's why I bought it. But I do a fair amount of driving on fwys for road trips and I can't have the drone at 2.2k. That's right about 75mph. If this doesn't work I may go back to the factor exhaust with the valve pinned open. Plus the PSP downpipes.

My M340 (B58) has a huge cat-less downpipe on it with the stock exhaust, and its the perfect amount of rowdy and quiet when it needs to be. The engines are almost identical, so I am surprised how bad the drone has been to get ride of comparatively. Maybe its the lack of sound deadening.

Fun fact: I have two Great Danes I put in the back with my smart cap on. They love the room but its noisy... I put a med shag carpet piece on the floor of the bed, and my wife swears its quieter all around.

Seems odd to me that you’re experiencing drone with the AFE. In my case I can hear the tire noise over the exhaust. At 75 it’s just a light hum in the background and no resonant drone in the cab. I wonder if there is an issue with your mufflers.

is the performance increase with your downpipes noticeable?

Yes I definitely feel more power and torque on the low to mid end, but unfortunately I didn’t take before and after 0 to 60 times. I would still say the power increase is noticeable.

They didn't have instructions for the PSP or RAD downpipes so were flying blind but they said it looks like a slight pain to get done and quoted 6 hours at $160/hour to be safe but thought it'd probably come in less. How much have y'all been paying for install or how long has install taken for the DIYers?

Took me about 4 hours but I have a lift and did everything from the bottom, it would have been way easier if I disconnected stuff from the tips, also i had to bring the truck down from the lift to put the transfer case in neutral. So if i had ti do it again i think it could be done in 3 hours.

Are there how to's or instructions anywhere from anyone showing how to r&r them? I just replaced the downpipe in my M240i in less than 90 minutes, but that's a very straightforward job. Should I get downpipes I'll need to know that I can do them on the ground with ramps.

Drivers side fender liner comes out.


Skid plates come off.


Front driveshaft comes out.


4 bolt from the front diff yoke and loosen the clamp on the t-case side and it pulls forward off the shaft.


If you dont have the appropriate extensions and swivel joints this part requires putting t-case in neutral to rotate the shaft to gain access to each bolt, back to the toolbox sucking reference.


Sway bar mounts un-bolt.


Then it's just unplugging and removing O2's and unbolting everything.


The bracket nuts are tucked up a ways, so again if you don't have a long handle ratchet this is gonna suck. I hit them from the top with the ol' makita power ratchet once I have them loosened.


Bottom one comes out first.


Then the top one comes out super easy as mucho clearance now exists. Oe ones are fairly large compared to the Fat Kitties.


New ones go in way easier as the occupy less space.

Agreed that the tire noise can be louder at times. But it is 100% the exhaust. It didn't happen until i put the exhaust in. Even AFE admitted there was significant drone.

This is part of the reason I have been waiting. I need a full weekend to tackle this. That's not a small amount of work. My M340 took me maybe 2 hrs to put a downpipe in, evo 1hr, M3 X pipe 4hrs. This seems more like 6hrs or more with removing some rather large pieces to gain access.

I knew this set up would be loud to I reached out to mbrp so they could sell me the resonated section that comes with the hellcat system. They sold me it and is now 1-2 weeks out so I’m hoping that takes the system down enough. The quality on the exhaust is very nice but I’m not happy with the fitment on one of the tips but I will tinker with it when I have my final configuration. If the resonators don’t tame it down enough I will take the current straight pipe section and try other mufflers. Here’s a idle and rev video

God I'd need to hear it in person. I'm not sure if that initial high pitch raspy sound is just it exceeding the capability of my speakers or if it genuinely sounds like poop. If you define bad as obnoxiously loud, I'm ok with that

Definitely obnoxiously loud, it sounds like something is vibrating super loud but once it warms up you don’t hear it at all.

Vibrating sound would kill it for me. Have you checked to make sure it's possibly not touching something? I have awe Ofg on my truck so I imagine it will be equally obnoxious

Once a get my new mid section with the resonators ill recheck everything.

I tightened everything today and put some spacers on the brace that sits under the two front pipes ( I think it was rattling there) Cold start sounds better now. I wouldn't say its a rattle anymore, just raspiness.
