I've spent a couple more weeks with the PSP downpipes and stock exhaust. I can say I really like how much faster the power builds compared with stock. With the setup I have (maybe also a CAT6), I can tell the power starts closer to 2800 RPMS versus lower 4s. Matches what was advertised. Though I would like a deeper richer sound, which is next on the agenda when it cools down.

I always tell people downpipes will make your vehicle feel better across the entire board. The entire powerband is improved, turbos spool quicker, flows better etc. . It's like if your vehicle just magically had a bit more power from the factory. It's just a general improvement

This is exactly why I built them... Felt sluggish and laggy down low. Come around a corner at 2500rpm and give it throttle and flat, unresponsive. Roll into it on the freeway at 2k and same thing.

3 more psi at 2k-2.5k is a huge improvement from stock then it starts to build fast.. 5 more psi at 3k-ish compared to a cat6 alone. It transforms the truck and makes it much more responsive and pull like a monster.

I'm glad you are enjoying the benefits and happy with the results, maybe sans the sound....

When I put a high flow downpipe on my M340, noticeable doesn't even describe the change. That was one of the biggest improvements I've ever felt in that car or most cars for a single part swap. Most of my cars are straight piped now! Except the 1M, can't touch that one! haha.

You’re on a similar path as I am. I have an MRT Trail Rated which I love as it almost completely eliminates the canned wet fart gear shifts but I just need a bit more, it’s too high pitched. Based on what I’ve heard downpipes are out, they’re way too difficult to tame for me.

So I’m thinking of keeping the Trail Rated and adding resonators, two just behind the cats (to smooth out some rasp and minimize cab drone) and two downstream of the mufflers (to hopefully deepen the tone).

I was thinking of going with Vibrant but most seem to think the cheap Amazon ones do almost as well?

I’m looking at the bottle resonators from LCGP. Just need to figure what I can fit in those locations.

Figure that might give me what I’m looking for (smoother deeper tone) without having to add additional h-pipes or x-pipes which would make the install more difficult.

If it’s too quiet (which it might be) I could always swap out the mufflers that come with the Trail Rated without having to rip anything else out.

I’m far from an expert on exhausts but that’s my current thinking.

Open to thoughts and critiques…

So I've been doing more research. I have the MRT trail rated on now. Im going to replace just the muffler section with 2 Borla Pro Xs mufflers. Im going to have the shop clamp them on so I can put the MRT mufflers back on if need be. Im hoping to get a little deeper tone, more volume at wot and similar highway drone as the MRTs. Ill keep you posted. Not installing for a couple of weeks.

MRT is on the same track. They’re working on an Elite version that will replace the current mufflers in the Trail Rated with upgraded versions.

I’m convinced this exhaust will never be completely optimized until the OEM mesh resonators are replaced with true resonators. They do help with cabin drone but it’s a cheap fix with a big trade off that contributes to the high pitched raspy angry weed whacker tone that sounds like it has an exhaust leak.

They may not cause much of an issue on big displacement V8’s but to my ear they definitely cause issues on this twin turbo I6.

Update to Trail rated post.

I had the MRT trail rated system on. It was about 15% louder than stock with no highway drone.

I replaced the MRT trail rated muffler section ONLY this morning with 2 Borla pro xs (part # 400284). You have to add a 3"-4" pipe section to the Borlas which i had the muffler shop add directly in front of the Borlas. The Borla muffler is shorter.

Result: The Borlas are 10%-15% louder than the MRT trail rated mufflers. (Roughly 25%-30% louder than stock). The sound is more refined and a little deeper. It has less rasp to it. And the highway drone is similar if not identical to the MRT trail rated. Theres barely any drone at 2000-2200 rpms ( 75 mph-78 mph).

Im happy so far. Worth a try if you want a little more refined volume than the MRT trail rated without more drone. Good luck.

Note: I think switching the stock muffler to 2 Borlas will produce similar results but I am not sure about the drone. The MRT mid-pipe exhaust comes with 1 piece before their muffler and 1 piece after their muffler ( on each pipe) and they are angled slightly i would guess for sound frequency. That things is SICK! Love that BMW era. The M340 is the G20, so the B58. The B58/S58 will go down as being two of the best engines from BMW of all time. Right up there with the 2JZ and 4G63.

I think I am going to download the picture of all those inner coolers as my new computer background!

We’re OT on this downpipes thread (with apologies to the OP) but I just did something similar. I replaced the dual muffs on the MRT Trail Rated with one Magnaflow 12469. It bolts up but it’s not easy to get everything aligned since the outlet pipes are offset from the inlet pipes on the MagnaFlow.

Cold start and idle are only subtly different. Maybe slightly deeper tone and a little less rasp on the cold start. No louder than the dual Trail Rated muffs, probably slightly quieter. The 2K to 2.5K rpm cab drone is still there (this is the Trail Rated’s weak point) but it’s less pronounced with less annoying resonance.

Previously the truck sounded like it was struggling in this 2K-2.5K rpm range under mild acceleration, like it was too low in the power band. Like when you have a dirt bike in 3rd gear on an incline when it should be in 2nd. I’m sure it wasn’t struggling but that was the feeling from the cab drone with the MRT’s dual muffs. That’s gone, it just feels smoother in this rpm range now. Probably due to the integrated x-pipe in the Magnaflow muffler.

I never had that issue with drone on the trail rated. And acceleration was always consistent. Ive read that switching from 2 mufflers to 1, decreases sound and air flow, thats why I bought 2 Borlas. But I considered your route as well. I clamped everything on so I can always mess around with it later. I heard MRT was coming out with an in-between trail rated and extreme but that would probably be too loud for my taste. O didnt want a lot of volume. Just deeper tone.
