Regular 88 Gas

I had the 6.4 boat anchor in my GC SRT. Since it was a work car, I would put lower octane in it if I knew I was running distances on the highway etc. This engine is a whole different animal...Heat, as someone mentioned above, is something this engine is very good at generating, and lots of it. Running in the heat is where the extra octane is necessary, regardless of how hard the truck is being driven.

It's pretty clear that Ram considers it required. The question you and others continue to conflate is whether or not you can get away with ignoring this requirement.

No amount of circle jerk forum talk is going to change these facts. Put whatever gas in you want and see what happens. Maybe nothing. It's still required in the eyes of the manufacturer who holds the warranty.
I don’t know… I noticed the green pumps gave me the best performance.. said something like diesel on it, something weird, no octane rating, probably higher than 91.

PREACH!!!!! Can we please pin these two posts? i am so tired of every day a new post " cAn i rUn 30 oCtAnE fUeL".

Owners manual: These are high performance motors and need 91 octane minimum
Gas cap: 91+ fuel only
Entire forum: "RUN 91 in your truck "
Truck: " i have 550 hp and you spent nearly 6 figures on me, please feed me 91 octane"
Person: "does this mean i can run less than 91?!"

SMH!

Spends $80k+ on truck, worried about price of 91 octane.

If i see another fuel octane thread I'm going to have a brain aneurysm. LOL

RUN 91 OCTANE IN YOUR TRUCK.......DID EVERYONE HEAR ME? LOL. SHOUTING FROM A MOUNTAIN TOP IN MONTANA

I hope the next person that runs less than 91 octane grenades their motor and ram finds the piss water in your tank voids the warranty for clearly not doing what the manual says.

Op: this isnt at you, just fed up with how many people can ask the same thing. all in fun. welcome to the forum 🥰
Great breakdown on the reply !! I'm seeing " if you want it to run RIGHT run 91+ ..... You PROBLY won't hurt it running 87 !!!
I guess it IS under warranty for awhile ... go ahead and risk it:ROFLMAO: Me....... I'm runnin 93 :)

This guy gets it! People can put mcdonalds fry oil in their tank if they want, doesn't bother or effect me in any way, just stop asking about it on here for us to have to see daily.

Sometimes my emotions get the best of me but some things do need to be said and i regret absolutely nothing! LOL

Good afternoon everyone, current lurker while I wait on my RHO to be built. I've been seeing some of the discussions about fuel type and got me thinking about if anyone had tried regular 88 gas in their RHO yet. Seems like it's been established that premium is recommended, but the truck can handle regular gas. I currently run regular 88 in my 5.7 Ram and it runs fine with it. The reason I ask is because Regular 88 in my area tends to be $1.00/ gallon cheaper than premium. Would make a lot of sense for road trips and such where you're just drinking gas on the freeway and don't need the performance from premium. Assuming the truck could handle it.

For those unaware as I know it's not available everywhere, it's 15% ethanol fuel with an octane rating of 88.
If you want to run 88. I would buy a lower trim.

One of the first things they asked me when my cats melted was what fuel I put in the tank. I’m sure if you ran into an issue the dealership wouldn’t hesitate to pull a fuel sample to test and send results to Stellantis… I wouldn’t risk it just put what they recommend. You gotta pay to play!

IMO, I would only run regular gas in an emergency. Like, it’s the Zombie Apocalypse and the only fuel available to get me the hell out of town. Of course, there are bigger problems than what fuel to run in my RHO if society has completely collapsed.😂😂

My current daily is a used Alfa Romeo I bought for $17k, and premium is the recommended fuel. Thus I’ve run premium in it since the day I bought it. I never thought asking if a certain fuel type would be ok to run on road trips/ highway commuting would rustle so many feathers.

If I can afford an $80k truck I can obviously afford to put premium in it. But I also don’t care how much money I make, if I can keep a little bit more in my pocket, I’m going to do that. So when the chief engineer of Ram says on record that premium fuel isn’t necessary in the HO Hurricane motors, then I’m sorry for opening up a discussion about it in the forum.

But again thank you to everyone jumping in to insinuate that I’m too poor to afford the truck.

I don't think anyone is insinuating that you're too poor to afford the truck. No one knows anyones personal financial situation here. Don't take anything on the internet personally.

I think what people are saying is if you're interested in keeping more money in your pocket (which is totally understandable), why would you buy an expensive, "unnecessary" $80,000 truck to begin with and then cheap out on fuel of all things? It just doesn't make any sense to the majority of people. Why buy a high output, high compression twin-turbo motor then cripple it with shit fuel?

I think the only question he’s trying to get answered is whether or not it’s safe to run 88. Maybe if the lower octane pulls back timing a small amount and the engine operates at -15hp it’s worth the tradeoff to save 20% in fuel costs. It’s up to each owner to decide if that’s worth the tradeoff. Watch your HP graph on the center display and assess how often you’re driving at peak power where you’d realistically notice a performance difference.

Why do most of us run 91 instead of dropping race fuel in the tank? Afterall, it says 91+ recommended.

I can appreciate the question. I don’t have an answer for whether or not it’s worth the tradeoff for each owner, though.

Definitely makes sense. I would personally just never run any less than the recommended fuel in any vehicle, especially with these finicky modern turbo engines. I don't think it's worth the potential headaches/issues. They recommend the fuel for a reason, it's not like Stellantis is making any money off the gasoline you purchase (otherwise there'd definitely be an argument to be made there lol).

Yes, this was literally all I was asking. I even mentioned using it only for low stress driving, aka road trips where you’re just on the freeway cruising at 70mph. Obviously if you’re doing high stress driving like off roading, towing etc It’s a no brainer that you should run 91+.

All I was getting it was whether or not low octane fuel would damage the motor, or if it would just result in less power.

Either way it seems like premium is more of a requirement than a recommendation on this truck so I plan on running premium 👍🏼.

I wish we had prices like that, here...

Our POS Governor here in The People's Communist Republic of ExpensiTaxifornia stated after the Nov. 5th election, he would keep gas at the same price (in other words, Tax TF out of us), no matter what happens to the price nationwide.

Currently, Costco gas is the cheapest I've seen locally. Regular is $3.899 and Premium is $4.399.

I'll be there next week (Hesperia) can't wait to fill up there :ROFLMAO:
