1st oil change

Hi everyone, just hit 890 miles. Is everyone doing the fiest oil change at 1000? Or is 5000 miles good. Getting mixed info. Unable to decide
My opinion. I’ll have my truck on Saturday. I’ll do my first oil change somewhere between 500-750 miles. I’ll likely do the second one at 1500 and then on every 5000 miles on the odometer. Is it necessary? Nope. Does it hurt anything? Nope. Does it get any excess metal from break in out of your engine early? Yep. It’s an expensive truck. To me, it’s worth the couple hundred bucks to do the extra oil changes.

My BMW M4 recommended 1,200 for oil change and diffs. With how our RHO's start and rear end ratio's that seems like a good mileage to me.

Makes sense

Yes...Change it now...One of the easiest oil changes you will come across...The engineer who designed the Hemi needed a throat punch, the engineer who designed the Hurricane needs a Hug and a case beer or wine incase they are a Guido....

The HEMI oil filter location is atrocious on the trucks. 9 out of 10 times changing the oil on my 2014, I’m guaranteed to make at least somewhat of a mess.

Has anyone done their 1st oil change? No place around me carries OW-40 full synthetic and they admit they have never changed the oil in a RHO. Trying to avoid going to the dealership. Curious if anyone has had trouble finding a spot or is it just me?
FYI, you can go into the Ram app and pay 145 for two oil changes at the dealership.

most dealers offer packs of oil changes, my local does 3 for $225 including tire rotate. So $75 each; super cheap way to prevent any warranty claim oil arguments and I don't have to-do tire rotates.

This^^^^^^

This keeps the warranty people very happy. I know the Magnuson act is out there for all of you who change your oil…but that can be tricky if you don’t keep explicit and accurate records with receipts etc

Just not worth the effort imo when it’s so cheap to buy the packages.

First oil change is free
Not the dealer here in Vegas. Went yesterday to set it up but they said when they looked it up no bueno, but we can do it for $320 haha. I'll do it myself as usual, but they did say the trailer module recall was ordered for me haha app doesn't even show I needed it.

I'll be doing my first today or tomorrow at 500 miles. The drive home from taking delivery was just under 400 highway miles. I'm going to follow TMOG's advice... 500, 1500, 3000, 5000 then every 5k.

Although the Hurricane filter has a much easier to access location, don’t think you won’t make a mess. The engine holds at least a 1/2 quart above the filter & that sprays everywhere once the filter threads break loose from the engine.

I tried the oil udder XL & didn’t do it right. It caught the small amount of oil that dribbles out when the rubber gasket releases. I forgot the majority of oil splashes out later. Keep the oil udder on the filter until it breaks free.

Someone mentioned or I saw where they took a real sharp punch or awl and punched it through the bottom/top center of the filter before loosening it and letting the oil drain through that hole. Makes much less mess. I'll definitely try it.

Do what you want, but that’s excessive!

Get the break-in debris out by 1200 miles, then follow the 5K/6 month interval.

If it’s good enough for the hand built versions of the BMW M-spec I6, it’s good enough for Hurricane HO.

Make sure turn the filter a bit to loosen before punching any holes.

I think that’s a great idea as long as your punch is sharp & you only have to do a light tap to make your hole.

I wish mine was free! I bought from Mark Dodge but took it to a local dealer in San Antonio to get the 1st one done and was blown away that it cost $160 for a basic oil change.
What dealer did you take it to? I bought my RHO at San Antonio CDJR. The sales department was terrible but I ultimately got the deal I wanted. They said “no” when I asked for the first free oil change. Service department was closed so I wasn’t able to meet them. I noticed my driver door is slightly unaligned and I’m getting little wind noise but no water leaks in during car washes. Bottom line, looking for a good service department that won’t keep the truck all damn day for an oil change. I’m leaning towards buying the discount tire warranty for $300 which covers the tires and free tire rotation for the life of the tires..

yeah...not free unless they offer it on the deal. I ended up working a deal for 6 years of Oil changes / tire rotations for 700 CDN. After seeing the price of decent 0/40 etc I thought that was a pretty darn good deal. I figure one year alone would pay for that in spades.

Did they give you a mile minimum or max per year?
