Tell me why you buy fuel not recommended again? As you may not know since this could be your first turbo. NA engines can usually use less octane given the thinner air(less oxygen to burn), Even then, your octane should only be lowered by one or two octane(if you vehicle calls for 87, you could run 85 or 86 if its available).

However, engines with forced induction are less affected by altitude because they compress the air themselves, meaning they still require higher-octane fuel (often 91+) as recommended by the manufacturer.

Hope this helps you understand the basics of engines and how they work in higher elevations.

It’s your truck and you’re gonna do what you want but using the proper fuel is at the very least cheap insurance. I’m in Texas where my fuel costs are much lower than yours and I STILL wince every time I fill up the tank. $90-$100 every week just to go to and from work. That’s not even really getting to enjoy my drive. I have plenty of money too and like you I don’t enjoy wasting it. But I’ve done the lower octane fuel in a high compression engine before (6.2L L87) and I had engine knock for a long time but never really knew what it was until I thought about it one morning after I started my truck. I filled up with 93 octave and it stopped. Been a believer ever since.

I ignored the recommended 91 octane and just put 87 into my RHO yesterday. I will post back in 2032 if I have any issues here, but I know it will be fine.

Its like buying a Rolex and wearing it with a bath robe all day.

You're basically doing what the pump does internally. Most gas station pumps blend the regular and premium fuels to get the mid grade. The important thing is to run at least 91, doesn't matter how you get there.
