What did you do to your RHO Today?

Changed the fluids in the front and rear diffs as well as the transfer case (just hit 3k miles). Pretty easy job overall. You could probably do it with the truck on the ground, but it was much easier getting the skid plates off with it up in the air a little bit.

For those wondering if you should change the fluids so soon - yes, without hesitation. I couldn’t believe how bad the rear diff fluid was. Very dark and full of glitter. No large metallic pieces. But the magnetic drain plug was caked with metals. The front diff wasn’t much better. The transfer case still looked fresh - but you might as well change it when you’re going through all the work anyway.

I also highly recommend the kit from Blauparts. All high quality Ravenol fluids. And the quart bottles come with integrated hoses that make it nice and easy to fill without special pumps.

Front Differential Fluid
2 x RAVENOL Gear Oil DGL 75W-85 GL-5 LS 1L
Rear Differential Fluid
3 x RAVENOL Gear Oil SLS 75W-140 GL-5 LS 1L
Transfer Case Fluid
2 x RAVENOL Transfer Case Fluid BW44 Fully Synthetic 1L

wow, 3k miles, seems like huge overkill

I was going to wait until 5k, but I just put it under quite of bit of stress towing over 8k lbs. So, I figured doing it now might be smart. I’m glad I did. I wish I could have taken a picture of how bad that rear diff was. I’ve done diffs with 80k miles on them and not look as bad as this did.

That said, tolerances in a rear diff aren’t so tight that the fine metals would cause major issues. But I don’t love the idea of running abrasives like that, especially when it’s so simple to service yourself. The rear is a 15 minute job.

yes that would be really interesting to see .. I never thought of replacing the oil, at all..

that's exactly what I was thinking, if you seen that metal glitter in motor oil it would be different story, but with the diffs clearances will it really do anything to the gears?

Didn't you see the thread about the rear diff? I changed mine at 5k and it was nasty....we also tow our boat and know it adds additional stress. It was super easy and felt much better afterwards.

I dropped her off at the dealer this morning for a clunking in the front driver side....So they say I need a new diff and shafts!

Wow. What year? How many miles?

And no ETA on a diff...Axles they can get.
And since it’s a “replace parts only” deal at stealership they can’t just regear it I assume.

OIL CHANGE! It's been a bit. Whoever posted it was a fairly terrible. Was write. I've worked on a lot of things. What were they thinking with that oil filter placement. WOW. Then they try to save it by putting what can only be described a stamped tiny funnel right below the oil filter. "Here, this will help guys!" Silly.

Removed the “Ram” emblems from the doors. Gives a cleaner look to me. Besides, the supersized emblems on the front and rear are enough!!!!
That is one of the first thing I did when I got my truck, along with the 4x4 emblem on the tailgate.

I’ve done three oil changes myself so far. Here’s the trick I learned:

Get yourself a short funnel with an opening wide enough to fit around the oil filter. Stick the funnel in that hole in the skid plate. Then, take a screwdriver and drive it up through the bottom of the funnel into the oil filter. Slide your drain pan under, pull the screwdriver out, and let it drain. Once it’s all drained, keep the funnel in place and unscrew the filter.

Gets the job done with very little mess.

It was almost 90deg out when I did it. So i wasn't thinking about all the right steps. My filter came off with almost 1/2 a qrt of oil coming out of it. I figure it was mostly due to the oil filler cap still on (again it was hot) and the pressure holding oil in. I've never seen that much oil come out of an oil filter before removing it.

Yep exactly how I've done mine its almost like the hole in the skid plate was put there for the exact placement of a funnel. I didn't puncture the oil filter though. Just used the filter wrench. Highly recommend one like these. I've got 2 that covers a wide range of different filter sizes. They are lisle brand tools. Quality
