With premium gas potentially hitting $8+/gallon by Summer, is anyone regretting buying a 14 mpg pseudo Baja truck? No politics, please!

I hear ya.

I’ve wanted a TRX since they were released. Fuel economy held me back.

After owning RHO, I’m less concerned about TRX fuel economy, more concerned with spending $100+K on the aggravation of Fiat based electronics!

I know you are joking.... kind of, anyway, but not sure the hit to the MPG would be worth the savings per gallon.

Havent done the calculations recently, and it definitely depends on the vehicle, but a few years ago, at what the prices were then, I did the comparison on the GMC I had at that time, and also a Honda Civic as well. After testing several tanks, of E10, and No ethanol, The drop in MPG just in 10% Ethanol was enough to mean most of the time the price savings at the pump was not enough to cover the increased fuel consumption.

My owners manual literally stated a tank of non ethanol would run 100-150 miles farther than a tank of E85. Which most people I talked to didnt realize what it was telling them. Which was same amount of fuel very different range, so very different MPG economy. I never did any calculations with E85, as I have never had anything that could/should run that, but if 10-15% ethanol drops the efficiency that much, E85 must be really bad in one way or another.

I say all this being from the state that pushes Ethanol more than any other, Iowa literally runs on Corn... and Hogs.
On my current E85 tuned SQ7 I get 75-80% the mpg using E85 and enjoy the effortless power. Bring on the 🌽

No regrets! I love driving my RHO and it makes me smile every time I look at it. If gas goes that high I will definitely drive it less and have to ride my bike more but I don’t regret buying it and I love everything about the truck. The looks, the comfort, and the performance of the high horsepower engine.

Not ideal for sure if I want to do any more road trips this year. But I am lucky enough to have options instead of the truck. Costco to the rescue when I do need the gas though.

Orange County, Southern California is seeing $6.25 for all normal gas stations. I am sure 90% is well inflated over their actual margins on a typical gallon. I firmly believe gas stations ramp up prices way before they actually see their increases and then inflate them higher than typical margins because of the excuses they can use.
You bet your ass they do !!! The minute the first bomb hit in Iran the price went up 25 cents ! And Cali went up like 2 dollars !! You can't tell me the stations aren't gouging ! Gas is just under $4 a gallon in michigan and $8 in Cali ??????? Their definitely ripping us off !!!!!!!!!!

It's over $5 for premium in MI now. Course ol Stretchin Gretchen introduced a new gas tax this year which isn't helping, but still.

Cali, isnt just the gas stations gouging, its the state government. They have much higher taxes on gas than anywhere else. They also have all but shut down any refining and production in the state as well, so they have to truck all the fuel in, meaning the transportation costs are much higher. For instance in my state, it is like clock work, being very close to the the hub, gas will be $xx, being 25 miles away, its 5-10 cents higher, 50 miles away, it will be 10-20 cents higher, etc. because of the transportation costs of trucking the fuel. I can only imagine having to truck fuel 100s of miles into the state would drastically increase the cost.

Your local gas station probably makes the least amount in the chain of production. I knew a station owner, that told me that the income from gas was not great, especially when you put all the cost of the regulations to sell it. What it basically was, is a way to get people in the door to buy other products that they make more money on. When your local gas station increases the price, it is because their supplier has increased the price, from which they are increasing because their supplier has increased price etc. The gouging comes from the top, and the guy at the bottom, the local gas station, just does what they have to because they were forced to.

You and I know that if a barrel of oil goes up today, it should not mean tomorrow gas increases, that barrel of oil takes months to hit the refiner and then down to the gas station even longer. So the prices "should" have a similar lag, but we all know that doesnt happen. As soon as the oil prices jump those in control instantly jack the price, so everyone down the line has to match that increase.

Unfortunately, the local station, is the low man on the pole, they have the least control and make the least amount. But that is the way it works, just try to remember 99 times out of 100 its not the local guy gouging you, its someone far above him that is controlling everything.

woof sorry for the long winded post.

I did the math yesterday on a trip from Lansing to Grand Rapids, which isn't far at all.

The round trip cost me $73.80. Now I can afford it, and I get I didn't exactly buy a hybrid (though I DID order it while Ram was still advertising 20mpg) but I'm probably going to be looking into a second vehicle if we don't see relief at the pump soon. It's increased 35% in a month.

Again, this isn't whining or "can't afford the truck," just kinda feels like pissing money away at the moment.

There are about 5 guys on the forum who will be glad to see you use 87.

No plans to do that. I'll sell my house first.

It's principle.

Anyone ever use any kind of Octane boosters? I have never even researched them, so I know nothing about them. Good? Bad? etc. Do they work as they are supposed to? Which is good, which is bad? etc.

I will be in some areas at times where fuel choice wont be much of an option, and will basically need to take what they have for fuel. (Hell I grew up in a town where the local gas station had and still only has 1 type of gas, and 1 type of diesel. That gas is, 87 with 10% ethanol.

So in the case that my only option is to run something like that, do I just run it? Throw in some Octane booster with it? If there is something that is good out there that is worth it might throw a spare bottle in my truck to have in case, when on trips, or when I might be in areas with few choices.

I run Klotz in my Roadglide, but it's pricey and 6 gal vs 33 gal is a huge cost difference...So it wouldn't be cost effective.

Back in my dumber days, I used to occasionally run VP Race fuel or even aircraft fuel on occasion (the leaded stuff) in my Motorcycle. You would not believe how much 100+ octane fuel, changed the way it ran, sounded, and most of all smelled.

At that time I had an Yamaha YZF R1 with a compression ratio of something like 12.5:1. I honestly dont know how that thing could run on regular pump gas, but it did, just nothing like it did on the good stuff.

The thing was a rocket before good gas, with good gas it was insane!

We wont get into all the other stupid stuff I did back then, in and on vehicles, among other things.
