CAI or no CAI???

I’ll be doing some dyno pulls next week. I’ll start with a pull using the OEM intake, then follow it up with my intake setup and a less restrictive air filter.

When it comes to filtration, just because a filter is less restrictive doesn’t automatically mean it filters less. You can have a design with more pleats, which increases the overall surface area and allows more air to flow through without sacrificing much filtration efficiency.
Maybe you could try one with factory intake and less restrictive filter also !?!?

So from what ive seen, I went from a consistent 20psi with the afe filter to 22psi through out the rpm range after installing my intake. A local member will also be testing it once im doing working the kinks, along with a set of downpipes. Im not talking about the ~28psi spike, thats only momentary.

I have since added a Cat6 and now im seeing 24psi consistently through out the rpm range.
I just added the AFE track intake with red carbon fiber, I noticed more turbo sound and a slight increase in HP and torque and I also have a Cat6 installed before any addons , the boost was only 20psi not the 28 the MFG. states , with the Cat6 I went to 28 psi and now with the AFE cold air intake it, 29 to 30psi , JB4 tested a competitors Cold air intake and found zero gains at that time.

That's awesome!! Thanks for confirming what I said about the "additional boost"!

Dyno results?

Cat6 on the way and have been enjoying the CAI so far.

Dyno results?
Using the trucks gauges , Sunoco 94 octane, 64 degree F , 40% humidity ,is where the numbers came from, there's not a lot of 4 wheel dynos around and to disconnect the front drive shaft defeats the purpose of AWD truck design, the stock numbers were compared to the Cat6 and AFE after installing them, I sure it's close to what it really is.

What I would like is to simply change out the silenced factory tube from the air box to the manifold and leave the OEM CAI box & filter as is. I understand (I think) that a silicone tube is prefered vs. metal / plastic due to heat sink --- any recommendations for just the tube?

BWOODY performance offers tube only, as well as filters too. Or somewhere in this forum some guys have made their own. Would not do metal if making your own.

It doesn't get as hot as you think it does. I have a thermal imaging camera, and it remained at ambient temp temp while the truck was in motion. Just like everything else, it did get little hot while stationary.

I have some tubes as well if you're wanting to replace your oem silencer. I just don't advertise them, as they'll be used with my intake system.

how do you like the intake?
The gain is what they said at AFE and you hear more turbo noise and air being drawn in the air box which has twice the openings over OEM and there is no baffle inside the intake tube like in OEM the tube is straight and smooth, I think it is worth it if you have a tune , you have to use at least 93 octane I am able to get Sunoco 94
octane.

it's hard to dyno placebo effects :D

I love this.

Here's Burger Tuning confirming what I encountered after adding an intake. They also saw an additional 2psi jump. Here's the video, skip to the 8min part.

Btw, are you saying Jeffs quicker times after installing the K&N system are from a placebo effect?

He compares times at the 6min mark.

Placebo OR if there's a dyno it's because they're selling the thing (Berger). Third party dynos are few and far between

so KN intake with JB4 adds more boost, and less power  .. something doesn't math there.. ok graph says it added 7hp on stock engine, even if it did I don't think is a great $$$, 7hp on 540hp truck that weights 6000 pounds.. but notice the Burger guy says they getting more psi but 15hp less than with stock intake on the map3, and he says this platform doesn't need aftermarket intake :)

This started over a “psi” increase after adding an intake, which was proven true by the guys at Berger and the OP. Now you’ve shifted to horsepower claims. I guess the next thing you’ll say is that adding boost makes more power, which is true. The point I’m making is that the intake added boost pressure, not necessarily power.

Like I previously stated, I'll post my dyno sheets after the pulls later this week. I'm not afraid of being wrong, but I never claimed a HP increase on the intake just that I saw an additional 2psi.

But it is odd that boost went up and more power wasn't made.

K&N does not have an intake for the RHO out yet…soon though. This intake for the non-rho 3.0s did not make any gains on the rho…because it was not developed for it.

Also true!!

ok I will agree with you then.. the intake adds 2psi over stock, which doesn't result in more horsepower, so basically for $350-$700 you get more psi that does absolutely nothing with the truck performance (y)
